Character Name: Maleficent
Gender: Female
Type of Creature: Fairy
Rank: Force of Evil
Movie/TV Series: Sleeping Beauty
Home Island: Isle of the Crown
Personality:
Maleficent is a reclusive fairy that is content to live far away from the goings on of the mundane kingdoms of the realm and is quite content to do so. It is no secret that she has turned her back on any semblance of good magic and instead chooses to only use her magic to do damage or destruction towards those who have wronged her.
Though she ultimately despises the populace in general, she will form alliances when she feels they will benefit her. She also tends to keep a vast amount of expendable minions to do her bidding. Whenever the whim strikes her, Maleficent periodically likes to remind the kingdoms surrounding her domain that she is there and her power just as strong as always, sometimes choosing to offer them repercussions for something she might perceive as an insult. (Such as not being invited to the christening of a royal birth when the other fairies were.)
She is cool and calculating and also can tender patience when needed. Her plan to kill the Princess Aurora took sixteen years and she had also intended to keep Philip locked in her dungeon for a century before releasing him to rescue Aurora from her sleep- His mistaken capture a sign of her adaptability when her well laid schemes have a wrench thrown into them.
She always presents herself with a regal and majestic air. Though she is not royalty, Maleficent wields an immense power and therefore expects to be treated a certain way. Though in front of others she'll retain her stoic behaviors, she has a fiery temper and has no problem taking out her wrath and frustrations on her minions back in her mountain keep.
Maleficent also possesses a rather unconventional sense of humor given her more evil nature. She laughs at the misfortune of others and finds the idiocies of others hilarious.
Overall Maleficent is a vengeful fairy who has no problem raining down despair on a kingdom over the simplest insult. She isn't necessarily ambitious or actively violent but will retaliate against any that oppose her and will form alliances that she feels will benefit her.
She is also very honorable. Whether it is simply her own disposition or her tie to the magical realm, Maleficent will not go back on her word once she makes it and will follow through with any deals she might make. It is also rumored that fairies cannot lie, which might also have something to do with her honorable nature.
Maleficent also seems to enjoy the melodramatics of cursing and otherwise making a bit show of her powers.
Powers, Skills, and/or Any Other Abilities:
Maleficent has a very firm grasp on the Dark Arts. She is able to call on an unlimited arsenal of magical powers to aid her in whatever her cause and has demonstrated a number of her abilities:
- She can call on the power of lightning while using her staff as a conduit.
- She can place a curse on an individual and though it can be altered, it cannot be completely undone. She is too powerful for anyone to completely reverse a spell of hers- and also dangerous for another magic user to mess with a spell cast by another. (She also has a tendency to interfere in whatever way necessary to make sure her wishes are fulfilled.)
- She has called upon the elements to bring forth an instantaneous forest of brambles to prevent Prince Philip's entry to Stephan's castle.
- She can call on the powers of the underworld to grant her the power to transform into a formidable black dragon or presumably any other form she might wish to assume.
She can just as easily take pleasure from a simple trap versus an elaborate spell. She also seems to enjoy the theatrics of cursing others as opposed to killing them.
Unlike some magical beings she can directly affect the lives of mortals if necessary though. Sometimes if a curse she delegates is compromised, she is forced to take matters into her own hands. Like with Princess Aurora's curse, she had to actually lure the princess to an unprotected location and create a spindle with which she could prick her finger, allowing her prophecy to come to pass.
As an incarnation of pure evil power, Maleficent has never expelled enough magical energy to tire or weaken her and therefore the full limits of her powers have never been exposed. It appears that she can perform any kind of spell or manipulate kind of energy to meet whatever end she desires.
There does seem to be some limit to her magic as she doesn't simply alter the very fabric of reality in order to do away with her enemies. (She seems to prefer to toy with them instead of just doing things the quick way.) But whatever the limits to her magic are, they don't seem to be too constricting.
Weaknesses:
Though her magical powers seem limitless, when it comes to curses it seems as though she is bound by the terms she states when she casts it. Whether this is the result of some greater power or simply due to her own ego wanting to make sure her prophicies come to pass, it isn't know. But regardless she does seem bound to her word.
As one of the true Fae, Maleficent is bound by the truth. Though she has ways of spinning the truth to suit her needs, she cannot in fact lie outright or speak falsehoods.
She is not invulnerable. She was easily defeated even in another more protected form, when struck with a magical weapon.
Though she is extremely powerful, she is not all powerful. As a result her spells and curses can be altered if not broken and those who she might curse to death might find themselves a less mortal outcome.
Due to her own theatrical nature, there tends to be a lot of time to disrupt or otherwise stop her various curses and spells.
Her minions are idiots.
Canon History:
It is unknown how long ago Maleficent came to live on the outskirts of King Stephan's lands. It is said that she and the other faires of the land were there long before any of the surrounding kingdoms were even a glimmer in someone's imagination. She herself cannot even say since time passes for an immortal differently than for humans.
When Stephan and his Queen specifically arrived many of his knights thought that they would make a name for themselves by destroying the 'evil sorceress' that inhabited the mountains nearby. Maleficent dispatched of them and sent a warning to Stephan that he and the inhabitants of his kingdom should stay out of her lands lest they incur her wrath.
Stephan, looking out for the welfare of his people, forbid anyone to venture out and disturb the fairy and they entered into a tenuous truce. Maleficent leaving them in peace so long as they left her in peace.
That arrangement seemed to work rather well until the baby princess was born and Maleficent was not invited to the child's christening. The fairy took it as a personal insult and decided to retaliate. Whether she was bored or simply looking for an excuse to get at Stephan and his kingdom, even Maleficent herself doesn't remmeber.
She put a curse on the infant princess. It proclaimed that by her 16th birthday she would "prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die." Much to her chagrin an opposing fairy, Merryweather, was able to alter her curse to put the princess asleep instead of die which she did not foresee. She also did not foresee spending all of the sixteen years searching for the princess who seemed to have disappeared overnight.
Though her minions had spent all those years seraching the princess Maleficent was unaware until close to the 16th year that they had been looking for a baby instead of a young girl. She sent her raven, Diablo, to continue the search. Diablo quickly reported back that the princess was hidden in a cottage deep in the forest.
Maleficent quickly set out along with a handful of minions to set a trap for Aurora but again the princess eluded her. She ended up capturing Prince Philip instead. She kept him prisoner in her dungeon until he was set free by the Three Good Fairies.
Though she attempted to use her magic to stop him from reaching the castle nothing seemed able to slow his progress. She finally opted to take matters into her own hands, calling on an immense amount of power transforming herself into a giant black dragon that breathed yellow fire.
With the Fairies' help, Philip was able to subdue Maleficent and break the curse she had placed upon the princess.
Game Information:
After Maleficent was defeated and her curse on the Princess Aurora was undone, the Circle of the Fae imprisoned Maleficent in the Forever Stone.
For many decades Maleficent slumbered, ironically trapped in her own magical sleep. She and those that slumbered with her were awakened by a force even unknown to them.
Once she realized what had happened, Maleficent's rage could not be contained. She reached out to those who had been imprisoned with her in an attempt to create an alliance before returning to her home at the Forbidden Mountain.
Anything Else:

Maleficent sat on the cold elegant throne in her stone fortress. The throne itself was sculpted from one solid piece of rock and was somewhat gothic in appearance, decorated with bat-like and other gargoyle type designs. In one delicate hand she held her golden staff while the other lay atop the armrest shaped like a monsterous arm that ended in curled talons, her fingers drumming against it lazily.
With so many allies she had hoped that at least one of the might have managed some sort of successful plot to extract vengeance on those that had wronged them and yet, it didn't seem as though this were the case. Not one of them had reported in and the fairy was beginning to show signs of frustration.
While she had every intention of going after that fool Stephan and his daughter- not excluding that nuisance of a prince and those meddling fairies- she was waiting to see if perhaps she could allow some of the others to begin their own tactics which would perhaps allow her targets to become anxious, knowing that she would be coming for them and there would be nothing they could do about it.
Maleficent waved a hand arbitrarily in front of her face and a circular clouded image large enough for her raven to fly comfortably through began to form in front of her. The image slowly came into focus, but as usual the sound seemed to sharpen more swiftly than the image.
"OFF WITH THEIR HEADS!!" The bellowing voice of the Queen of Hearts reached Maleficent's ears with an unexpected volume. She frowned slightly though was unable to deny herself a rare quip.
"Now, are you actually talking TO someone, or are you just practicing in a mirror?" Maleficent raised one elegant eyebrow at the question.
"Maleficent!" The Queen spun around at the sound presumably seeing her own 'bubble' of Maleficent's face. The frightening visage that was the angry Queen's face twitched into one of surprise before quickly melting into a much more demure demeanor. She smiled pleasantly back at Maleficent batting her eyelashes as though she were some dainty wisp of a girl. "What a pleasant surprise."
"I'm sure." Maleficent responded dryly, "Have you anything new to report?" Perhaps periodic spot-checks would encourage the others to get a move on.
"Uh, no." She stammered looking quite uncomfortable.
"Really?" Maleficent put on an expression of what looked to be genuine curiosity, "I'd heard there were some trespassers in your lands. I'd have thought for certain you would have captured them by now."
"Well, they were here but... they got away... But-"
"They got away?" The curiosity behind the tone in Maleficent's voice had a hard edge to it like the blade of a knife. "Forgive me," She continued rising unconsciously from the throne in her anger, voice increasing its intensity, "I was under the assumption that the purpose of this venture was to present a united front in order to make sure every single one of these so called heroes paid for their crimes against us."
"It was! It- It is-" She continued to stammer.
"So allowing them to escape is helping to achieve this goal?" Maleficent's voice was loud now and the image the Queen almost seemed to cower beneath just the projected image of the fairy.
"No!"
"Then I suggest you intercept them no matter what it takes. We cannot afford any mistakes."
"Of- of course." She fumbled.
Hearing a clattering sound from somewhere outside the throne room's main door, Maleficent glared at the queen one last time, "You're dismissed," she told her and then waved her hand again to cause the image of the queen to disappear in a wisp of smoke before turning her attention back to the noise. "Who disturbs me?"
