Character Name: Goliath, Defender of the Night
Gender: Male
Type of Creature: Gargoyle
Rank: Force of Good
Movie/TV Series: Gargoyles
Home Island: Isle of the Statue
Personality:Goliath has a very strong sense of right and wrong. His mentor, Hudson, instilled this in him from a very young age. His clan and the humans in Castle Wyvern got along quite well, for the most part, and Goliath got used to their snide comments. At this point, he's not completely immune to disparaging remarks, but they will not wound him nearly as much as they would have when he was younger.
He is, first and foremost, a protector. When the Castle was moved to New York from Scotland, Goliath was initially set in his ways, stubbornly protecting the castle even when he knew it to be lost to Xanatos. When the others convinced him that it was a lost cause, he expanded his protectorate to include the whole of Manhattan. Quite frankly, Goliath considers all the citizens of this city to be under his clan's protection.
Even though he can be quite noble at times, that does not mean that Goliath is perfect; far from it. He has quite a temper, when it is riled. Depending upon the circumstances, that temper can flare rather quickly. And if it does, whoever has caused that anger had better watch out.
With the people (and Gargoyles are included in that) that Goliath cares about, though, he shows his softer side. He tries to stay strong in front of his clan, but they have seen his weaknesses, as well. Elisa has seen most of them, at this point, though.
Powers, Skills, and/or Any Other Abilities:
Quite strong: As a Gargoyle, Goliath is much stronger than any human, even at peak physical condition. He's also a lot stronger than most Gargoyles because of how big he is.
Able to climb buildings: His talons allow him to grip onto buildings, even those that don't have hand or footholds. The tallest building he's climbed so far would be the Eyrie building, which is the tallest in Manhattan.
Can glide on air currents: Gargoyles use their wings to find air currents and they use those currents to stay airborne. It's something that Gargoyles learn from a very young age.
Doesn't age at the same rate as humans: Because Gargoyles spend their days in a healing stone sleep, they age at about half the rate as humans do. This means that they have a longer lifespan than humans, and aging them as though they are humans will backfire, as shown by Jackal's plan when he made them old and frail.
Heals quickly when in his stone sleep: The stone sleep, in addition to allowing Gargoyles to age at half the rate as humans, is rejuvenating. Even when a Gargoyle is close to death, as long as the Gargoyle makes it to dawn, the stone sleep will heal them. There might be some lingering effects, if the injury was particularly bad or magical in nature, but a few more stone sleeps will cure the Gargoyle completely.
Weaknesses/Flaws:
Can be too trusting at times: Especially with people from his past, Goliath trusts too easily. He can be blinded by his emotions, as first happened with Demona and Coldstone. It takes him a while to learn from his mistakes, but he does, most of the time.
When someone betrays him, he's pretty much unwilling to give that person another chance: Which is what happened with Demona. It took a lot of convincing for him to give her another chance, and she ended up betraying them again. That incident confirmed his desire to refuse second chances.
Then again, depending on who it is, he sometimes gives people too many chances: Again, this is the sort of thing that happened with Demona. The two of them were in love, once, and that has influenced him in many of his offers to her; deep down, he still hopes that she'll turn around, for Angela's sake, at least.
Very stubborn: When he believes that he is right, Goliath can be quite stubborn. It takes a lot to change his mind, and even then, he sometimes changes it back, depending upon the situation.
Has a very bad temper: Goliath's temper tends to get the better of him, quite a bit. He's always had issues with his anger, and it's hard for him to think clearly when his temper runs high.
Canon History: Goliath was hatched in 938 at Castle Wyvern, Scotland. He was raised in the traditional way, by the whole clan.
As he grew up, though, his mentor was the leader of the clan (who would later be known as Hudson). Goliath was an adept pupil, and eventually became even better than the old clan leader.
The leadership of the clan change hands, and the humans of the castle took to calling the new leader of the clan "Goliath," after the Biblical giant. He was, after all, the biggest Gargoyle that they had yet seen.
Even though some of the humans in the castle didn't exactly treat the Gargoyles very well (despite the protection they offered), Goliath and his clan protected the castle.
Until one fateful day. The Captain of the Guard had given vital information to the leader of the Viking regiment that had been laying siege to Castle Wyvern, hoping to take the castle for its wealth.
The Captain told the Viking that he should attack during the day, since the Gargoyles would be in their stone sleep and unable to protect the castle.
Goliath and Hudson were the only two Gargoyles that were not at their usual posts when the Vikings attacked. They had gone after the Vikings, in an attempt to stop the threat before it started again, and were caught outside the castle in daylight.
The other four Gargoyles who survived the massacre were in the Rookery, sent there earlier that fateful day for immaturity. Goliath is thankful for their early foolhardiness each day, now that there are seemingly so few Gargoyles left.
The Viking leader and the former Captain of the Guard captured the Princess Katharine, Lady of Castle Wyvern, and made off with her, pursued by Goliath, as soon as he had discovered the remains of his clan. He had been saddened and infuriated by the loss of his brothers and sisters, but none more than his mate, his "Angel of the Night." He followed the Vikings for revenge and ended up saving Princess Katharine in the process.
He was, however, denied his revenge. The Captain of the Guard was heartsick and full of remorse over what he had done and grabbed the Viking leader, throwing himself and his adversary off of a cliff to their deaths.
While Goliath was gone, though, the Magus who had been an apprentice to the evil, now-defeated Magus, took up his former master's book and cursed the five gargoyles to sleep "until the castle rises above the clouds."
Goliath returned, with the Princess, and the Magus apologized for what he had done. The page with the counter-spell had been burned, and there was nothing he could do to reverse his pronouncement.
So as not to be alone for eternity, Goliath asked that the Magus repeat his spell one more time, that he might sleep with his brothers.
1,000 YEARS LATER
Goliath awoke from his stone sleep, some time later (about 1,000 years, to be exact). He had no idea how long he had been sleeping, and neither did any of his brothers, who awoke with him.
David Xanatos was there when they awoke, ready to explain how they had awoken. The man tried to get the Gargoyles to do his dirty work for him, and it worked, for a time, until he betrayed them.
During one such incident, Detective Elisa Maza was sent to investigate the Eyrie building, on top of which Castle Wyvern had been moved. The dog-like gargoyle (Bronx) scared Elisa, and she fell off of the top of the building. Goliath leapt after her, and saved her life.
The two of them struck up an uneasy sort of truce, until Elisa guarded Goliath during the day, when he was vulnerable. Once that had happened, Goliath knew that some humans were different; not all of them were out to betray their allies if it would better their own fortunes.
Over the next few months, Elisa pretty much became part of the clan. Goliath, the Gargoyles and Elisa had to face Xanatos many times, occasionally foiling his plans, occasionally furthering them by foiling them.
Through all that has happened, Goliath and Elisa have become friends, and now, something more.
Game Information: Goliath has continued to protect his city, to the best of his ability. He would like his relationship with Elisa to become something ... more, but, well, a relationship is a partnership, and he can't exactly move forward with it alone.
Anything Else: This particular Gargoyle is rather large. Large and muscular are two good words to describe him. Broad, as well; his wingspan is quite impressive. Which is one reason he was made head of the clan.
Gargoyles don't fly; they glide. They need to be able to judge the wind and its currents, almost as much as they need the ability to adapt well should the wind not exactly be the strongest.
..:: Sample Post ::..
Goliath awoke from his stone sleep, stretching with a mighty yawn. How long he and his brothers had slept, they would soon find out.
Stretching his wings, stiff after who knew how long in his stone form, he looked around, glad to see that his brothers were awakening as well.
"We live!" he cried, ecstatic to be seeing the night sky again. But this sky was different, changed, somehow, from the skies above Castle Wyvern. Had they slept so long that even the skies had changed?
Surely not. Surely, it was awakening from such a sleep that made the skies appear different to Goliath's eyes.
But then, another answer came to hi as he gazed down from above the clouds; the Magus's spell had finally been reversed, and somehow, Castle Wyvern rested high above brilliant lights.
Was it night at all, or was it merely some blinding imitation for the sun? No torches or candles burned with such a light.
And then, suddenly, there was another man in the castle, a man with long hair and a beard. He looked friendly enough, but soon, too soon, the Gargoyles would discover that he was no friend of theirs.
