"and for his willful, intentional and deliberate campaign of harassment..
"Those all mean the same thing!" Basil snapped.
The detective wasn't having the best day. He'd been called out on what was apparently a case, which turned out to be under false pretenses, he'd been mobbed by a group of thugs and had woken up blindfolded tied to some kind of pole like object. From the sounds of the group around him they had just wrapped up some kind of kangaroo court and were proceeding straight to the sentencing. At least the long winded speaker gave Basil time to try to free himself as he tripped over big words, lost his breath in run on sentences and pretty much butchered the Queens English.
"campaign of a harassment ending in his murder of Professor Padraic Ratigan.."
Basil rolled his eyes under his blindfold. The whole farce was coming together.
"Is that what this is about? First off, the pursuit of justice is not harassment. Secondly I have the right to defend myself when a sewer rat is trying to tear me apart." A gasp came from the crowd. "Oh shut up, you all know very well he's a rat. and third he's not dead."
A murmuring of confusion came from among the group before the leader pulled off Basil's blindfold giving him a full view of the situation. He was currently bound on top of a small bundle of wood in a fireplace in some large country house. The group before him was indeed made up of Ratigans old gang, a mix of criminal rodents, reptiles and small mammals. They'd even put in the extra effort of organising themselves into a small court with a judge, jury and executioner. The hooded executioner in question holding a torch at the ready to perform his task of burning Basil at the stake. Fortunately the news of their sinister master's potential return had given them pause.
"Good lord, you couldn't have done this closer to home." Basil muttered realising he was potentially miles from London. "I'm sure none of you want to explain to Ratigan how you executed his nemesis before he had a chance to outwit him."
"I think he's got a point boys. Pack it up."
The criminal court all slumped in disappointment at their wasted effort and started filing out of the room via the open window. The executioner sounded most upset under his hood as he grumbled and threw his torch over his shoulder. Basil resumed trying to loosen the ropes, before pausing to sniff at the smokey smell coming from behind him. A frustrated look to the side confirmed that the torch had been thrown right into the kindling, putting a sudden time limit to Basil's escape. Sadly you just couldn't make a good counter plan when the opponent wasn't using a plan in the first place. The detective tried to work faster, raising his tail as it started to singe.
"Why couldn't they have picked 'firing squad'? At least then they might have shot each other and solved things for me."
Things might have seemed to go for bad to worse for Basil when Dinah entered the room, heading straight for the fireplace to watch Basil's predicament. The kitten waved a paw tentatively in his direction, being too intimidated by the rising flames to do any more. She looked mildly perplexed, however, at Basil's presence and particularly his clothes.
At a loud meow from Dinah, Alice arrived, looking somewhat bored. "What is it, Dinah?" she asked with a yawn, before shaking herself into alertness as she noticed the fireplace. "Now why would someone go and light a fire? It's far from cold. I suppose there's not much to do but let it burn out..." she commented- as she'd had a bit of a harrowing experience once when she tried to put out the fireplace.
She looked closer and was startled to see Basil struggling to escape. Quickly she grabbed a pair of tongs and lifted the stick on which Basil was tied free of the others, before rushing to a bucket of water and letting it drop in, extinguishing whatever flames were left on it. She then proceeded to untie Basil and held him in her hands, holding him up to her face to get a close look at him. "How do you do?" she asked. "We normally don't abide mice in this house, but you're so well-dressed I don't suppose you'll be any trouble." She smiled.

Untying knots that were out of your field of vision is a difficult task, more so when you're surrounded by steadily thickening smoke. Basil was in just such a dilemma, cursing his luck that everyone involved in the rope portion of the execution insisted on using different kinds of knots. Suddenly there was a voice from somewhere in the room and the stake was lifted from the fireplace and doused in water. The bonds were untied afterwards and Basil was deposited in the open hands of a young blonde haired, blue eyed girl. She was soon inquiring about how he was doing, friendly and with well spoken English. At least Basil was apparently on a reasonably close Isle.
"Pardon the intrusion young lady." The detective did his usual flourished bow while sweeping off his hat. "Basil of Baker Street, Detective and Agent of the Crown at your service."
She mentioned that they normally didn't allow mice in the home so Basil was thankful that she was at least willing to make exceptions, especially with the kitten padding around at floor level. Still, he wouldn't overstay his welcome if it would make the other people in this home uncomfortable, he'd just need to find out where he'd been dragged to in the first place.
"and thank you for the timely entrance. I apologise for my enemies using your fireplace as a deathtrap. Would you happen to be the homeowner? Also if you don't mind me asking. Where exactly are we? I was unconscious for most of the journey."
The detective honestly didn't have much to go on deduction wise, though odds were good that the girl was one of the many good individuals chosen to inhabit Rohandor and balance out the villains. Like several of the Princesses she was kind and willing to converse with animals, it seemed that was a common trait linking most of the heroines.
Alice couldn't help laughing with delight. He was the most gentlemanly mouse she'd ever heard of! "A detective? From Baker Street? And an agent of the Crown, you said?" She placed Basil on the table and backed away so that she could offer him a curtsy in return. "Well, my name is Alice," she said, "and I'm very pleased to meet you! Though, I suppose it could have been under better circumstances." Especially as he seemed to have been brought forcefully to her home. She took a nearby seat as the conversation continued.
"Oh, no, I'm much too young to be living alone just yet," she answered. "I live here with my parents and older sister. And Dinah, of course," she added with a smile, nodding in the kitten's direction. "As for where we are... we're not too far from London. Though it would certainly be farther for you than for me." She'd already had plenty of experience with having to navigate distances at different sizes, so was well aware that what would be an easy ride into the city for a human would be a long journey for a mouse. "Still, it shouldn't be too difficult to get back home."
As she considered Basil's words a bit more, a curious look appeared on her face. "If you don't mind my asking, sir, what sort of enemies brought you here? I wouldn't want my home to be a hideout for criminals of any kind!" If he was a detective, she guessed his enemies would be criminals.

Basil raised an eyebrow as Alice laughed, though it didn't seem like she was deriving any amusement from him.
"Well, Agent of the Crowns plural if you want to get technical. Nowadays I lend my services to any Royal from the Isles that need my assistance, as well as my usual walk in clients." He looked to the side at the kitten as Alice introduced her. Probably not likely to attack but if she was as playful as Toby then he'd best be on guard.
The detective was relieved that he seemed to still be on the Isle of the Stone and within easy travel distance of London. Surely he could find a train line or road nearby and stowaway on the next vehicle passing by. Though for now Alice was concerned about the group that had tried to do away with him and if they were still around. It was better that he ease her concern over such things.
"Well, it's hard to describe without context so I'd better explain things in full."
Basil went on to retell his first and biggest case with his partner Dawson, about how Professor Ratigan plotted to take over the country by kidnapping the Queen and replacing her with a robotic double to name him as her consort and give him the power to declare any crazed law he wished. There was the kidnapping of the toymaker Flaversham who was to build the robot Queen, his daughter Olivia who sought out Basil, Ratigan's deathtrap and the thrilling chase by hot air balloon culminating in a battle among the gears and on the clock face of Big Ben. Given his ego and excitable nature when talking about his work Basil was rather animated while telling his story, moving along the table and illustrating events with the appropriate actions and miming.
"Which leads us up to today. Ratigan's old cohorts were rather put out about what happened to their leader, so they apparently decided on a hastily arranged mock trial and execution. I'm sure your home was just a happenstance choice, perhaps they wanted to avoid attention by acting outside of London. I don't think they'll be back, but if you ever happen to see any suspicious small creatures like for example, a peg legged bat, lizard in a chimney sweep's attire or a large sewer rat with delusions of eloquence you might want to put a heavy box over them and call the constabulary."
The detective wouldn't expect any civilians to handle the villains released from the Forever Stone, nor did he expect Ratigan's forces to use Alice's home as some kind of headquarters, but some advice didn't hurt. Nor did educating others in the possible actions they could do to aid the Forces of Good.
ooc: Huh, just noticed the concept of a mouse in a biased court that wants to sentence him to death is pretty apt for a thread with Alice. The Fury and the Mouse's Tale poem anyone?
Basil must be very good at his job if he represented multiple royals, Alice thought. She didn't quite get the significance of the term "Isles" just yet, but it sounded as though he was some sort of world traveler. How exciting! Alice wondered what sort of places he'd been to; and it just so happened that Basil was about to tell her the story of his recent case. She took a seat and listened, thoroughly fascinated by the tale. All this had happened quite under the nose of the big folk! Alice interrupted on occasion to ask a question about some aspect of the mouse-scale culture. The whole subject seemed very familiar...
As Basil's story drew to a close, Alice was relieved to hear that her home was only being used temporarily by the criminals. She was about to say something about how much she enjoyed the story- she was rather tempted to make a pun about the "length of Basil's tale"- when he said something that made her sit up straighter in surprise. "Did you say... a lizard in a chimney sweep's attire?" she asked. It almost sounded as if that was the one thing in the whole story she didn't believe, but the truth was in fact just the opposite. "Because I've already seen him before, twice! But you see, that's very curious... as the first time I saw him, I was dreaming! Or at least... I've always thought I was. Now though, I'm not so sure. And I must not have been imagining him the second time either. Or, am I still dreaming now? ...Oh, dear! I feel so muddled!" She flopped back in the chair as she tried to make sense of things. She definitely remembered waking up from her adventure in Wonderland. Could she have dreamed that she woke up?

It was either the opportunity to blown his own horn or the interest that Alice was showing, but Basil found himself in a good mood after telling his story. The young lady listened intently, except when asking for further details but she never interrupted any of the really good parts. Though she really became interested once he mentioned the lizard.
"Umm, yes. Bill I believe was his name."
Alice launched into her own story, sort of. It was more like she was trying to explain one particular detail of her story, the detail in question being whether it was a dream or not. Basil raised an eyebrow as she collapsed back into her chair after getting caught in a loop and questioning the reality of the present period that she'd found herself in. The well dressed, talking mouse detective on her table probably wasn't helping matters either. Maybe he should try to alleviate her existential concerns about the nature of reality.
"Well, the good news is that you aren't dreaming now. Though I think you've been worrying too much about Metaphysical Solipsism."
Basil wasn't actually sure if he was helping his case by telling her that he wasn't the product of a dream. Though he could see how problematic it was that she may consider a product of her dream insisting on his own place in reality less than helpful. Maybe she was just sheltered and hadn't seen some of the more unusual places and people on Rohandor? What if she was right and everything including himself winked out of existence when she decided it was 'morning'. No, he couldn't let that get into his head or he might have to give up sleeping. As smart as Basil was, or any great mind was, any child could still rattle them with the right questions.
"How about..you tell me your story about what you thought was a dream?"
"Yes, Bill was his name," Alice agreed. Indeed, it seemed almost certain that they were talking about the same lizard. Thus, the confusion. Fortunately, however, Basil was ready to insist that she was not currently dreaming.
"I'm not sure what... meta-physi... what you said is." As intelligent as Alice is, there are still some words that are a bit too weighty for her. "It sounds more like something my sister would know about. But, I suppose I'll have to take your word for it that I'm not dreaming," Alice replied. It'd certainly be better to just accept things the way they were than get all bent out of shape worrying about whether she was dreaming or not. Basil then asked to hear Alice's whole story, and with that she smiled happily.
"Wait right there... I drew some pictures to go with the story," she said, rushing off with a spring in her step to collect her drawings from the place she'd left them. "After all," she continued as she returned with the stack of papers, "I've always preferred stories with pictures. Let's see..." Sorting through the drawings, she finally found the first one. "It all started when my sister and I were out in the park..." She proceeded to tell the whole tale of her trip down the rabbit hole, periodically shuffling through to a new drawing as she mentioned a new situation. Naturally she paid particular attention in her story to the incident in which she had encountered Bill- and sneezed him away. "He did end up flying awfully far into the sky," she noted. "That could be how he got here!" She continued her story, making sure to show Basil her drawings of the Mad Hatter's tea party and the talking flowers, into which she'd put as much detail as she could manage. She liked drawing flowers, even the ones that accused her of being a weed.
At last, she concluded with the part of the story that seemed most at issue: her pursuit from the Queen's court that led her back to the locked door. "And when I looked through the keyhole... I saw myself, sleeping under the tree! And I called out to myself to wake up, but it was my sister calling me instead, and... well, I can only say that I woke up! But if Bill is here, that can't be what happened. So how did I wake up from something... that wasn't a dream?"

Basil waited for a few minutes as Alice ran out of the room looking for her drawings, occasionally looking over at the kitten (Dinah wasn't it?).
"So, are you one of the speaking animals or the non speaking animals?" He waited awkwardly for a response. "Non speaking, very well."
Alice returned shortly with her arms full of pages, which she quickly shuffled into order and used to illustrate her tale. The whole thing did seem like a dream given how she described it. A rabbit whole fit for her size, a series of unusual characters, food and drink that altered a person's size and the incident with Bill. The detective had to admire Alice's concern for others over herself considering that the Bill incident had started with her being trapped in a house with the locals trying to ignite the building to smoke her out. If Bill had merely gotten into the criminal life because he was lost after his landing or needed to pay off his medical treatment it was probably worth following up on later.
"Hmm, you have quite a talent for art." If he could get them onto the same Isle Basil would have to introduce Alice to Jane Porter sometime. "Have you considered having this story published?"
After that the story took a more unusual turn with what sounded like a very frustrating tea party, more size changing, talking flowers, a very surreal caterpillar, mushrooms and the court of the Queen of Hearts with a rigged game of croquet followed by an equally rigged trial and a near beheading. Alice finished up with her miraculous escape from a mob by finding her dreaming self and waking herself up. Basil just stood in silence for a few minutes trying to think of a rational, scientific explanation, one that didn't involve having to ask Alice if she was sure she didn't just eat the wrong type of mushroom while exploring the woods.
"Perhaps.." He grasped at straws for a few seconds. "Are you aware of the other Isles outside of this one? There are a lot of unique locations out there with their own uses of the normal and the abnormal, past and present settings, science and um, magic. Perhaps you found a secret route into this....Wonderland."
Indeed, Dinah was incapable of speech, though she did seem to be aware that she was being addressed, and meowed back at Basil, though not giving much indication of what her reply meant. She seemed to grasp that there was something different about Basil than the average mouse, at this point.
"Oh, thank you," Alice said, happy to be complimented on her drawings. "I tried to make them look just like how I remembered. All their appearances are quite clear in my memory," she explained. "Published? Oh, I hope so, someday. At the time it just felt like so much trouble, but once I was back home I could see how people might be entertained by the story. I know my sister was... well, I suppose 'amusement' would be the better word for how she felt about it." Now that it seemed that her story was true, she wondered if she should try to convince her sister of it. Short of dragging her down the rabbit hole herself, it didn't look too likely that there would be a way to do that.
Then, Basil offered a possible explanation. A secret route to another "Isle"? "Yes... of course!" The pieces were starting to come together in Alice's mind. "Something like that did happen to me again, just recently in fact. I found a door leading to another place... I believe it was called Arendelle. I thought I'd imagined that as well, but now I see it must have been the same sort of thing as that rabbit hole!" So, both Wonderland and Arendelle existed; she'd just happened to reach them in unorthodox ways. "Whatever sort of magic... it seems clear to me that magic is involved... brought me to Wonderland, must have made it look like I'd been dreaming when I left." It wasn't very nice of the magic to do that, she thought. It must have changed her memories to make her remember waking up from a dream! How rude!

As frustrating as it was for the scientifically minded mouse to have to chalk up yet another of Rohandor's mysteries to magic, Basil settled for keeping a pleasant expression while he and Alice tried to make sense of things. At least as pleasant an expression as he could manage while gritting his teeth behind a false smile. Sadly until he found the time and resources to put some serious work in to researching the Isles magic would have to do.
"False memories perhaps? When someone is confronted with a traumatic experience it's not uncommon for the mind to rationalise the difficult parts into something more manageable. Hold on, did you say Arendelle?"
Arendelle was one of the more recent Kingdoms to appear, initially unseen by the others for some strange reason. Basil had visited it on the request of Princess Aurora to act as an ambassador to the newcomers. The sisters Queen Elsa and Princess Anna had been most welcoming despite the unusual changes to their situation. If Alice had traveled to their kingdom then she may have ran into one of them, or both.
Still, it was a strange thing that from what she'd told Basil so far, Alice's home had nearby links to at least two other Isles. He should probably investigate further in case there was something that needed to be reported to the Council, or hidden from Maleficent's forces. He couldn't just leave if there was the chance an army of villains could start popping out of the ground and invading other lands through short cuts.
"I don't suppose you could show me this door or rabbit hole?" Basil inquired. "Perhaps I could run a few tests and make a proper evaluation of matters?"
"That could be true, I suppose," Alice said as Basil talked about false memories. She'd really rather think her memory was changed by magic than that she'd done it to herself. So for now, that's the explanation she was going to go with, at least personally. "Oh yes, Arendelle. I didn't really see all that much of it, though- I didn't want to be gone too long."
Basil next asked if Alice could show him to the portals. "Oh, I've looked for them many times since then, but I haven't been able to find them," she explained with a frown. That was part of why she'd thought she'd simply imagined those adventures. "But now that I know I really did go to those places, perhaps I'll be able to find them again." At least, it was worth taking a closer look- and with Basil along for the trip she might be able to find something she'd previously missed.

Unfortunately Alice wasn't confident in locating the doors or rabbit hole that led to Arendelle or the other Wonderland place that she might have dreamed up. Basil's nose twitched as he covered the majority of his frustration, given that a secret route between Isles would have been an excellent find for the forces of good. Still, no sense worrying over what couldn't be helped, at least for now.
"Well, you'll be glad to know you didn't dream up Arendelle. I've visited it recently myself, lovely part of the world. I don't suppose you met a young lady named Elsa? Or her sister Anna?"
Hopefully the Queen and Princess were doing well. Things were tense for the new Isle during their transition and they also worried about an individual named Hans looking for revenge after a previously failed takeover of their home. The detective didn't know the full details of the story but given Anna's reaction to his mention there was some amount of ill feelings towards him, a far cry from her usual...distractedly sunny disposition.
"Well, you can contact me anytime a similar situation repeats itself." Basil handed over one of his cards from his pocket, momentarily wincing about neglecting to write up some larger ones again. Microscope sales must have been soaring among people looking for his contact details. "and I'd be careful who you mention these doors to. There are people who'd use such short cuts for immoral purposes. Again if you see any suspicious characters don't hesitate to contact me."
As he finished talking Basil clambered down the table to floor level, cautiously walking around Dinah, who seemed more curious than anything.
"Unless you require anything else, I don't suppose you could direct me to the nearest train station or main road? I'd best return to London in case I'm needed." That and he needed to do something about the smoldering tip of his tail. Luckily he'd managed to maintain decorum during the conversation.
It may have been a disappointing answer for now, but Alice was now certain she'd be able to find the way back to Wonderland soon enough. The same for Arendelle- in fact, the mouse was now saying he'd been to Arendelle himself! "Yes, I met Anna!" she exclaimed happily. "She was very kind. She showed me about the market, and was very helpful when I felt lost." It was a relief to Alice to know that she might be able to return there as well, especially since Basil had already gone there some other way. Arendelle was a beautiful place, and she'd like to visit with her whole family someday.
Accepting the tiny card, Alice held it up close to her eye, attempting to read it while pinching it between two fingers. "I'll be sure to do so... though, I don't know if the postman will deliver letters to mice. ...Is there a mouse postman I need to talk to?" Basil had to get his mail somehow, and a mouse postman seemed to be the best option. She nodded in acknowledgement of Basil's warning, and hoped her eagerness to tell the story of her travels in Wonderland hadn't caused too much trouble, back when she thought it was only a dream.
At last, Basil began to make his exit. Alice provided him with the requested directions, knowing well the importance of good directions. "It was very nice to meet you, Mr. Basil. I hope we'll meet again."

Basil stopped in his tracks when asked about how written correspondence would actually reach him. Most of his larger mail came through third party messengers, such as Ariel sending that Seagull.
"You know. I'm not entirely sure about the finer details of the Royal Postal Service. Just address it to 221 Baker Street and it will find it's way from there."
Either Basil, Dawson or Mrs Judson could retrieve it before the humans upstairs noticed it. Maybe Toby could be trained to recover it, probably in return for some kind of reward to give him incentive. The detective would have to look into this issue further. Alice was somewhat reminiscent of the young Miss Flaversham, how she could get Basil thinking just by asking the kind of questions that an adult would overlook. Frustrating for the adults, but it opened up new leads.
It was good to hear that Anna was still in good form and had given Alice a tour of at least part of her Kingdom. With any luck the other lands were still hospitable despite the multitude of villains running around. For now Basil climbed up to the open window, turning around to return the farewell to Alice. Odds were that they'd meet again at some point, plus he did owe her for saving him. Hopefully he could run down a few straggling criminals on the way back to London.
"It was good to meet you too Miss Alice. Hopefully next time with less fire and I bid you good luck in your explorations. Take care for now." Then he dropped into the grass outside and scurried off, following the directions he was given.
