There had been a time, not terribly long ago, that if someone had told Jane she'd be traipsing through the jungle, wearing little more than a loincloth-type dress, following a baby baboon to help a wounded young elephant, she would have laughed right in their face. She would have told this person that she was a proper English lady, and though she was going to the jungle with her daddy on his expedition, they would only be traipsing through the jungle for research.
But, here she was, living in the jungle with Daddy and Tarzan, currently following a baby baboon to help a young elephant. She had her sketchbook with her, of course, in case she happened to spot something really interesting, but her purpose today was to help Mabo. He'd hurt his foot and had asked the baby baboon to get Tarzan for him.
Tarzan hadn't been there when the baboon had come to the treehouse, but Jane had, and she knew that this was something she could handle. So she'd gathered a few supplies and her sketchbook, and they'd set off.
It didn't take much to figure out that Mabo only had a thorn in the bottom of his foot. Once she'd taken that out and cleaned the wound, he'd been moving around much easier and had gone to rejoin his herd.
"There, now that that's done," she said, smile on her face as she sat down on a nearby log, "I can get a good sample of this plant." It was one she hadn't seen around the jungle that often, and she wanted to take a good likeness of it back to the camp, to see if her Daddy knew what it was.
Narissa had been hoping to find Tarzan, as her current task required someone with knowledge of how to traverse his jungle home. But the energy it had taken to transport herself here had left her strength sapped just enough that she couldn't muster the will to cast a spell to seek him out just now. Gingerly, with care not to damage her dress, she leaned against the trunk of a nearby tree and closed her eyes.
She soon opened her eyes again at the sound of a woman's voice somewhere nearby. Hurriedly righting herself and stepping away from the tree, Narissa smoothed out the fabric of her dress while scanning the jungle for signs of motion. Sure enough, she spotted a flash of movement a little ways ahead--it appeared to be a young woman, sitting with her back to the sorceress. An easy mark for Narissa to rope into helping with her little scheme, or so she hoped.
She still didn't think she could summon the energy to change her form, but Narissa doubted that would be a problem. After all, how could she possibly be recognized as the disgraced ex-ruler of Andalasia in this isolated, backwater place? So, lifting the hem of her dress, she made her way across the jungle floor towards the woman. "Excuse me!" She called out. "Excuse me, do you live around here? Can you help me find my way?"

As Jane's pencil scratched away, she glanced up at the plant every so often, carefully capturing the likeness of the specimen. She was going to have to take a sample of it back to camp, in addition to the sketch she was currently working on. A sketch could only do so much; besides, Daddy would like to see this.
"There!" she said with a flourish, smiling at the drawing she'd finished. "All done. Now, all I have to do is get this sample back to Daddy," Jane said to herself, carefully reaching down to pluck up the plant, placing it between two empty pages of her sketchbook and pressing it shut tightly. Hopefully, she would manage to preserve it well enough for her father to figure out what it was.
She was about to head back to camp when she heard an unfamiliar voice, a woman's voice. Jane turned in the direction from which the voice had come, curious as to the new person in her jungle home. People didn't often travel to the jungle, especially not people as well-dressed (if a bit unusually) as this woman.
The Englishwoman looked around, despite the fact that she knew she was the only person in the current vicinity. "Oh! Yes, I live just over there," she said with a smile, gesturing the direction from which she'd come. "Are you lost?" she asked, her smile tinged with concern. "I think I should be able to help you; I'm quite familiar with the area these days," Jane added with a small laugh. Hopefully, she'd be able to help this woman; being lost was a terrible feeling.
Narissa found herself smiling back--so far, so good, she told herself. The woman seemed friendly, more than willing to help, and her good attitude was surprisingly infectious. Narissa's warm response was almost genuine. There shouldn't be any problems, as long as she was able to keep up the innocent traveler act. She'd managed to fool Tarzan, before, but she'd been disguised, and he'd obviously been an idiot. Narissa could only hope that this woman would be as naive as he was.
"I am, yes. Just how lost I actually am remains to be seen." She laughed lightly, mirroring the sound from the other woman as she finally came to a halt once she was close enough. "I'm... Rissa." She suppressed a wince at the sound of her old, much-hated pet name from her parents, extending a hand to shake. "There's a certain plant I'm looking for here, that grows near the volcano, but I got myself very... turned around. If you could at least point me in the right direction?"
As much as Narissa knew she needed help, she was wary of letting the stranger tag along all the way to her destination unless it became absolutely necessary. There was no telling what might happen on the way--specifically, what the woman might discover or realize about the 'friendly lost traveler' she was helping. And the fewer people Narissa had to keep quiet about her presence in Rohandor, the better.

While Jane was by no means an idiot (and neither was Tarzan, but that was beside the point), she genuinely tried to see the best in people. Until the proved otherwise, at least. That's what she'd done with Clayton, anyway, though he had decidedly shown himself to be a horrid person, in the end. Still, if she'd decided that he was awful in the first place, she and Daddy might never have met Tarzan. And she would be back in London, married to some stranger and possibly miserable.
But those were thoughts for a "what-if," something Jane didn't normally dwell on. She lived in the present, taking care to think of the future, sometimes. "What-ifs" didn't really matter. They hadn't happened and they wouldn't happen, so why worry about such things?
Even as Jane was thinking such odd things, the other woman was introducing herself. Jane smiled brightly at Rissa, as she had said her name was, reaching out to shake her hand. Handshakes made her smile now, but she suppressed that urge.
"It's lovely to meet you, Rissa!" Jane said, quite genuine in her excitement. "I'm Jane Porter," she added, by way of her own introduction.
Jane listened as Rissa detailed what sort of plant she needed. When she mentioned that it grew near the volcano, Jane knew that she was simply going to have to take Rissa there herself.
"Oh, that's not too terribly far!" she said in excitement. "But the way can be a bit dangerous if you don't know your way around the jungle; I'll take you there myself!" It had taken some time, but she'd learned the safe paths through that particular part of the jungle. Though it would take a little bit longer to get there with her as a guide instead of Tarzan, Jane was quite excited to show Rissa the way. She seemed like quite a lovely person, and Jane was happy to help.
"It's very nice to meet you as well, Jane." Narissa let Jane shake her hand for a moment longer before extracting it from the other woman's grasp. She seemed quite happy to make Narissa's acquaintance, which meant two things. One, Narissa had successfully fooled the girl without a disguise, so she was clearly gullible enough to be roped into helping the sorceress. Two, that she was eager enough to want to accompany Narissa to the volcano and therefore probably also nosy enough to want to know what exactly she needed there and why. And that could easily spell disaster.
Sure enough, Jane offered to take her all the way there. Narissa knew this could be a problem, or at least it could quickly become one if she wasn't careful. She opened her mouth to put up a polite protest, then stopped herself. It should be of no concern to her whether this girl found out about even a small part of her plan. She was a sorceress, she reminded herself, and could take care of things if a situation arose. But in the meantime, simple smooth-talk seemed to be doing the trick.
Narissa blinked at the girl, smiling faintly and bringing one hand to her cheek, turning her hesitation into an expression of touched surprise. "Well! That's awfully kind of you, Jane. I-I would appreciate that very much. Please, lead the way!"

Jane smiled at the other woman, waving away her thanks. "Oh, it's no trouble at all," she reassured her, wrapping her sketchbook's string around it and tying it off before she put it back into the bag slung over her shoulder. Daddy's plant was in there, and it wouldn't do for the sample to be ruined just because Jane had taken a few hours out of her day to help a lost stranger.
"Now, the path we're going to be following has rather a few forks off of it," Jane cautioned Rissa, "but provided we follow the main fork, it'll take us quite a bit closer to the volcano than the others." Of course, there were a few detours they would have to make, past rockslides and away from parts of the jungle that were rather infested with panthers, but they'd cross those obstacles when they came to them.
The Englishwoman started off, making sure that Rissa was following her every now and then, and offering her an encouraging smile. "I do so love the jungle, especially at this time of day," Jane murmured, glancing around as they walked. "Everything's touched just so with sunlight; it would make for quite a lovely painting," she mused. And then she glanced at Rissa, adding with a laugh, "I'm an artist, you see, and I tend to think in terms of colours and contrasts even when I'm not trying to!" Of course, that tended to get her into trouble when she started going on about everything, not paying attention to who might be listening and who was just trying to be polite.
Tarzan, of course, genuinely wanted to hear what she was talking about, but most of the time, Daddy was in the middle of some sort of experiment and didn't have the time.
"You chose rather a good time to search for your plant," Jane smiled. "It looks like we're between storms, for the moment, and if I'm right, I wager the next one won't come through until it's well on into the evening."

"Perfect." Narissa grinned, wheels turning in her mind. More ways to go meant it would be easier to shake Jane if needed. And of course, once she had her prize she should be recovered enough from her initial trip to simply transport herself back to Andalasia.
Yes, she decided, everything would work out just fine. Jane's comments only seemed to enforce that belief. The jungle woman was right on both counts. The light was lovely, and Narissa had timed her trip well.
She nodded along with whatever it was Jane was going on about, too wrapped up in congratulating herself until a word caught her attention. Hopefully Jane wouldn't realize now that Narissa hadn't been fully listening. The last thing she needed was to insult her guide, especially while they were in the middle of the jungle where Narissa would be hopelessly lost were she left on her own.
"Yes... Ah, back up a bit, I just thought of something. You said you're an artist? Do you, or would you, paint portraits on commission?" Perhaps it was premature to commission a portrait of herself before she'd taken back the throne, and she'd sat for so many paintings in her previous reign that she'd surely find having another done quite tiresome. But Edward was sure to have gotten rid of those by now, and she'd need something to commemorate her victory besides the throne itself.

The young Englishwoman led her unexpected guest through the jungle, making sure to take her via ways that would be the most direct, as well as the safest. There was one path they did not take, even though it would have been one of the quickest routes. But that path in particular was entirely overrun by panthers. While she didn't know the other woman very well, Jane had a feeling that she would rather not be chased by large cats through a place she didn't know very well. Jane did know the jungle and she knew that she would rather not be chased by panthers, period. It had happened once or twice before, and that was far too many times for her liking.
They came to another fork in the path and Jane took a moment, her arms folded over her chest, one hand resting on her chin, to remember which fork was the correct one.
"I could have sworn that once we got past the panthers, it was the right fork to the volcano," she muttered to herself, thinking. And then she finally realized that, yes, she had been correct when she'd thought the right for.
"This way," she said with a smile. And when Rissa asked whether or not she did portraits, Jane's smile only widened. "I'm quite good with portraits, actually. I haven't really had cause to do one in a while, but I do quite enjoy them."
She climbed over a particularly large log that lay across the path, glancing back to make sure that Rissa managed it all right, with her long skirts. "Did you have someone in mind for whom you'd like a portrait done?"
