As much as he hated the memory of his humiliation at the hands of the sisters of Arendelle, Hans had to admit that the kingdom itself was beautiful. It was one of the reasons he'd chosen it to be his kingdom, after all. At this point, he was intent upon getting vengeance for what had happened, and if that garnered him a throne in the meantime, well, that was just good planning, wasn't it?
But, in order to be able to get his revenge on Anna and Elsa, he needed to know more about them, needed to know more about the kingdom. In general, he needed more information so that he could properly plan a campaign against the royalty of Arendelle. Which meant that he had had to return to Arendelle before he was truly ready. He needed to scope out the kingdom, make a mental map to go with the physical ones he'd obtained. And more importantly, as much as he loathed the idea, he had to talk to the trolls.
He'd heard about them at the Festival, through a mysterious man who had been doing fortune-telling. Considering that he didn't have very many options, at this point, it was worth sneaking into Arendelle, at least to see if they could provide him with information. But, he couldn't risk news of his presence getting back to the palace, which meant that he was going to have an opportunity to put his acting skills to good use.
The Prince had disguised himself as an older man, down on his luck, and looking to find some sort of job that would allow him to buy food. He would try to get as much information from the trolls about the kingdom as he possibly could; after all, an old man needed to know what sort of place it was in which he was considering settling. The elderly were not as adaptable as they had been in their youth.
Now, all he had to do was find the bloody things. Which might take a little bit more doing than he'd anticipated.
Living in the palace was a huge adjustment for Kristoff. Growing up he had slept outside in the summers and in barns and stables during the winter with Sven. The hardest thing to get used to had been the bed-- sleeping perfectly flat, with no fat reindeer somewhere in the mix, had felt lonely. Needless to say, Kristoff looked forward to his trips out to see his family. He tried to make it into the valley every few weeks or so, just to check in.
Still, as much as Kristoff may have missed his mountain-man lifestyle, he had no intention of giving up what he had gained by grudgingly agreeing to help Princess Anna find her sister. Anna was his best friend and he loved her. She made him want to be a better person-- and if that meant attempting to act like a prince, then so be it.
Today, Kristoff and Sven were in the valley, visiting family. Bulda had given him a few chores and tasks to do, because she was his mother and she still believed that chores were good for him. Sven was being spoiled by a group of old trolls that had been brushing him for a few hours-- they would use the coarse fur they brushed out to make tools and talismans. Kristoff was playing a game with the younger trolls that involved a complex grid of and colored stones and crystals.
All the trolls were busy doing something, but all seem peaceful and content. Off on the other side of a clearing, a troll began to hum a low, deep, rich tone. A few other male trolls took up the note as well. Other trolls added their voice and soon the valley was filled with the haunting, stoney song of the trolls. Kristoff smiled to himself, feeling the sound vibrating inside his chest cavity.
His family could be a little bit inappropriate… and loud… very loud… stubborn at times, and a little overbearing. But they were a family… and they were his.

He had fashioned a cane out of a fallen tree-branch and, though there was no one around, he was using it. After all, there was no telling quite where this valley was, and he didn't want to give away his disguise. No, he had to commit to being an old man until he found the trolls, got his answers, and managed to get away again; Anna and Elsa couldn't know that he'd been here, or that would throw everything off. As far as they were concerned, he didn't care about them or about Arendelle anymore. As far as they were concerned, he was still under his parents' thumbs, living and atoning for what he'd done in the Southern Isles.
Just as Hans was growing frustrated, wondering if he was at all in the right place to find the ridiculous creatures, a very strange sound started echoing through the valley. At first, he thought that there was something wrong, that there might be an avalanche or a similar natural phenomenon, but upon listening closer, he realized that it was .... singing. That had to mean that he'd found the trolls.
Following the sound, he hobbled into the clearing, glancing around at all the rocks that appeared to be alive. This had to be the right place; now all he had to do was to get the trolls to talk to him.
"I'm so glad I found you," he said, pitching his voice to sound like an older man, to go with his outward appearance. "I was beginning to think that I would be wandering here for much longer."
When Hans entered the clearing, the first trolls who saw him fell silent, blinking at him curiously. Gradually, all of them took notice and the singing came to an end. It was rare for visitors to come to the Valley, but it did happen. Kristoff looked up and around, finally spotting the old man at the edge of the tree line. He didn't recognize Hans, but then again he never expected to see that man again-- let alone in the Valley of the Trolls.
The first troll to approach Hans was Bulda, Kristoff's mother. She rolled up to the old man and came to stand at her feet before him. "Hello, Wanderer. What brings you to us today?" She would hear him out and if she found his story worthy, she would go find Grand Pabbie.
Kristoff looked up at the sun, judging the time. He had a little longer before he had to start back. One of the younger trolls called his attention back to the game and he moved his piece forward before glancing over at the stranger again. He wasn't worried for the Trolls' safety. They had their own ways of protecting themselves. But he was a little curious to see what the stranger needed.

It was clear to Hans that he'd been right; the sound he had heard had been singing. When he approached, however, the music (such as it was) stopped, starting with the trolls nearest him, spreading in a wave of silence until the entire valley was eerily quiet. It was only for a moment, though; as soon as the echoes died away, the normal sounds of nature resumed.
Hans glanced around, a bewildered expression on his face. He couldn't appear to be too startled; he had come to the valley specifically to talk to the trolls, after all. But having heard about such things (even for such a superstitious old man as he was pretending to be) was completely different from actually encountering creatures like trolls.
Before he could fully process this change, one of the surrounding boulders rolled up to him, standing up to reveal itself to be a female troll. The creature greeted him, and he had to keep a sneer off his face. These creatures were ridiculous; how they managed to continue to exist was beyond him.
His facial features betrayed nothing of his thoughts, however, as he turned to the troll that had greeted him.
"I have travelled far and wide to seek your counsel," he told them, leaning heavily on his stick. "You see, I'm but a simple old man, forced out of his home due to circumstances beyond my control. I have been looking for a new place to settle down, but I want to make sure that I'll be able to survive here." He took a deep breath and let it out slowly, as though remembering something terrible. "The last place I tried, it was very hard for an old man."
Bulda blinked twice, peering up at the old man as he spoke. "Friend Wanderer, you have a very simple request. Most people only come to this Valley if they are in dire need of help. The way is long and hard." Bulda considered his question. "… But if it is a home you seek, the nearest human settlement is to the east-- the city of Arendelle." Bulda turned and waved for Kristoff. "My son, Kristoff, lives there."
Kristoff saw his adopted mother motioned for him and moved to obey. He got to his feet and the little trolls groaned, knowing that this meant their game was probably over. Sven looked around at the little trolls and helpfully moved a few pieces with his nose before wagging his tail happily. The little ones laughed and told Sven he wasn't even moving his own pieces.
The other trolls mostly went back to their own business while now and again casting curious glances Hans' way.
Kristoff made his way over to where Bulda and the old man were speaking. "Kristoff," Bulda said, "This man is looking for a home. Perhaps you can answer his questions about the human city?"
Glancing at the old man, Kristoff nodded, extending a hand to shake Hans'. "I'll try. Where do you come from, stranger?"

The female troll spoke once more, stating that his request was simple, that most people only sought them out if they were in dire need of help. Clearly, they didn't understand that he was in dire need of help, that he was an old man with nowhere to go, and that he had sought them out for information that would help him survive. Or perhaps they simply didn't care; they were rocks, after all. Why should they care about one simple old man?
But then, the troll gestured for Kristoff, the man who had helped Anna and Elsa foil his plans, to come forward. Hans made very certain that what he was really feeling was not visible anywhere in his expression or his body language; that would be a disaster, at the moment. He had to play his part, and hopefully, he would find the information he sought.
As much as he didn't want to have anything to do with the other man, Hans took the proffered hand in one of his own, making sure that it tremored a bit as he shook Kristoff's hand.
"I come from a far off place that has become quite inhospitable to one such as myself," he answered, leaning heavily on his stick. He leaned forward, glancing around, as though he was about to reveal some great secret, "I have heard that there is magic in Arendelle. Is it true?" He made sure that his voice was neutral, so that Kristoff wouldn't be able to tell whether he was excited or dismayed at the thought that magic might exist.
