"A Gargoyle doesn't whine; he ROARS!"
Post by Goliath on Jun 7, 2012 16:40:07 GMT -5
It had been quite uneventful, recently, at Castle Wyvern. As a result, the Old One had decided to allow Goliath to have a ... night off, so to speak. Goliath had been working especially hard, recently, patrolling the area, and making sure that there was nothing within 100 miles that would threaten the people of the castle.
The night was his to savor, and he, of course, had requested that his angel of the night be given the same privilege. As a reward for his diligence, permission had been granted.
It was a truly glorious night, and he would be sharing it with his angel.
He leapt off of the ramparts of the castle, taking to the air. Goliath loved the feeling of soaring, the currents of the wind underneath his wings, flowing by him. But more than that, he loved his angel.
The thought of her brought a smile to his face and a lightness to his heart. And he would be seeing her, as soon as he reached their spot.
It didn't take long, really, to reach the spot on the cliffs that he and his angel had claimed as their own. She would check in with their leader, and when he told her that she had the night to herself, she would know where to find him.
“…This is Hellebore, not Henbane!” The Archmage snapped irritably, “Go and fetch me the right ingredient you foolish creature.” The Archmage shoved the glass container into Demona's hands and she had to scramble to get a hold on it so it didn't crash to the ground. He went back to pouring over the spell he was working on and she scurried back to his vast shelves of spell tools, books, and components.
She frowned inwardly but kept her temper in check. As much as she would have loved to show him exactly who the foolish one of the two of them was, she had to restrain herself. Her thirst for mystical knowledge trumped her pride, which was saying something. He was the most powerful magic user in the area and aside from that, the only one who would teach her. Most humans were terrified of her and whether this one should be or not she didn't care so long as she was able to continue to watch and learn.
Demona reached out to place the bottle back on the shelf and quickly realized that Archmage must have placed the ingredients back in the wrong place the last time he used them. She swallowed back the rush of annoyance. She so very much hated being treated like some sort of thick dim-witted hound when he made just as many if not more mistakes than she did.
She was the apprentice. She was supposed to be the one learning and making mistakes. Then again there was so much mystical knowledge out there, could one who truly sought to be enlightened by such knowledge ever really be finished learning? Whatever the answer she heard the Archmage bellow for her and she replaced the incorrect jar and picked up the correct one, double checking the label.
It was soon after that Demona took her leave citing that she had to be on patrol. Her studies with the Archmage were secret to everyone. She couldn't take the risk anyone finding out and stopping her. Most gargoyles, and humans, didn't understand magic and it frightened them. She loved it. Reveled in the idea of its power. Not only would she have more resources with which to defend her kind, but she would also have the abilities to reach out and smite her underestimating opponents.
All these thoughts and more raced through Demona's mind as she glided off, returning to the sanctuary of Castle Wyvern. She was confused when her elder explained to her that she had the night off. "Aye, Lass," He told her with a knowing glint in his eye, "Goliath seemed ta think ye might need a wee bit o' time to... enjoy this nice weather we been havin'." Demona highly doubted that was the reason for the request but she was not one to question good fortune.
She thanked her superior and was soon airborne again. As Demona flew to where she knew Goliath would be waiting for her she half wished she had known he had done this so she hadn't rushed off from her lesson so abruptly. Almost as soon as the thought entered her mind, she pushed it away. Goliath hadn't asked for this time so that she could spend it with the Archmage- much as she might have liked to observe further- he'd done it so that they could finally spend some time together after the hectic weeks they'd had patrolling the castle and keeping their home safe. Not that it had been eventful exactly, but scrutinizing every inch of the kingdom almost every night got to be a little tedious. Given both her and Goliath's higher ranks, they tended to have more duties than the rest.
She caught her breath when she spied Goliath on the cliffs waiting. Waiting for her. He was always so beautiful and she could have spent the entire evening admiring him. He was perfection to her. Lean and strong. Long black hair she longed to tangle her talons in again and again and his dark eyes, always so intense and thoughtful. As though he could bear the weight of the entire world on his shoulders if necessary. Swooping down to land a few yards away from him she ran towards him without hesitation, "My love!"

"A Gargoyle doesn't whine; he ROARS!"
Post by Goliath on Jun 14, 2012 0:05:39 GMT -5
Goliath stood, perched on their cliff, overlooking the ocean. The wind whipped through his hair, bringing with it the saltiness of the ocean.
Really, Castle Wyvern was perfectly situated for easy defense; with the ocean on one side, it was that much easier to watch out for potential attacks from the other sides.
Of course, there had been a few times their enemies had been foolish enough to attempt to use the ocean against the inhabitants of Castle Wyvern, but the Gargoyles had stepped in, protecting the people of the castle, as they had been doing for countless years. And as they would continue to do for as long as they could.
Goliath was drawn out of his musings by a very familiar sound. He knew his mate's wings almost better than his own.
Turning to face her with a smile, he opened his arms and wings as she landed, enfolding her in both of them.
"My Angel of the night," he murmured, content to simply hold her for a moment. It had been quite some time since they had managed to have even the briefest of moments alone together, and tonight, they would make the most of it.
Demona allowed herself to be wrapped up in Goliath as she had so many times in the past. It was one place where she felt unconditionally safe and cared for. Especially moments like these were they returned to each other after having been apart. Seeing him look at her and light up like a star and whisper his pet name for her like a prayer, all other thoughts or regrets of her day evaporated as thought they had never been. She sighed blissfully, content to stay in his arms as long as he would hold her.
When he released her from their embrace as was always an inevitability, she hardly stepped away from him, keeping his talons in hers as she looked up and into his eyes. She loved watching him watch her. Loved the admiring look that she received from so many of their kind shining at her through the eyes of the one person she chose to look back at. "Goliath," She asked finally, "what is going on?"

"A Gargoyle doesn't whine; he ROARS!"
Post by Goliath on Jul 10, 2012 23:47:16 GMT -5
He smiled down at his Angel, eyes filled with adoration. No matter what had happened earlier, whenever he looked into her eyes, everything was perfect. Nothing could go wrong. They could face any danger, ward off any evil, and he would continue to gaze into her eyes for eternity.
"The old one gave us this glorious night. To share, together," he said, a smile softening his features. He could appear hard and forbidding to the rest of the clan, but for his Angel, he was a gentle creature, in existence to please his Angel.
"Come, my love; let us explore the skies, no other worry but for each other." It was such a rare treat to be able to glide solely for the pleasure of feeling the air beneath his wings, beside his wonderful mate.
If there had ever been a night better for exploring the skies with the gargoyle she loved, Demona didn't know it. The night sky was clear, clearer than it had been in weeks and dappled with stars. The waters below were relatively calm, the waves sliding gently against the rocks at the base of the cliffs. The air was warm and the strong winds coming off the ocean had none of the usual bite.
The near full moon was already high in the sky and the sight reminded her of a ritual she would be assisting with that the Archmage would be performing in a few days when the moon had reached its fullness. The thought of it sent a thrill through her body. Magic. Was there anything quite so enthralling? The answer to that came to her as she looked up into Goliath's strong face looking down at her with such adoration and love it was almost painful.
The high moon also indicated that the night was already waning and that her time with Goliath would only consist of these few precious hours. There would be other days for her to dwell on her mystical accomplishments while on patrol or any other time. This time must be spent selfishly and monopolizing these moments with her beloved.
Demona returned Goliath's smile in response to his words and turned her body towards the ocean as she clutched at his talon with her own. She held tight as she dashed toward the edge of the cliffs and spread her wings, feeling the wind and air catch in them as it lifted her back into the air. With the wind in her hair, the earth far below, and Goliath at her side, she was certain that this was a sort of happiness that no one else but herself would ever be able to feel.

Goliath felt Demona's movements and knew her intention before she started moving. His talons in hers, they moved in unison towards the edge of the cliff, wings catching the currents of air that would take them up, up, up into the moonlight.
A broad smile found its way onto Goliath's face as he looked over at his mate, soaring beside him in the moonlight. She was never so beautiful as when she was alone with him; her eyes shone with a radiance that he knew was only for him. There was good reason he called her his Angel of the Night; the Gargoyles may have been inspiration for a way to put fear into sinners, but Goliath knew that his mate was an Angel, a protector of humans, and a beautiful creature to behold.
"You are a vision in the moonlight," he called to his Angel, gazing at her with love and adoration. He wanted moments like these to last forever.
But such was not to be. Their moment of tranquility was shattered by a sudden shout; on the ground, a little way away from where they were gliding, there appeared to be a band of outlaws.
Goliath sighed upon seeing the group. He had known that a night off, alone with his beloved, would be too much to ask for.
"We should investigate," he said to Demona, the reluctance he felt evident in his voice. No matter how much he wantend to simply ignore the little band of humans, it was their duty to make sure they were not a threat to the nearby Castle Wyvern and its inhabitants.

Demona glanced over at Goliath to see him gazing at her with so much love and adoration it was almost painful. It was an expression that she rarely witnessed and when she did it was seldom more than a fleeting glance. The two of them were so often patrolling or otherwise occupied with their duties that even when they were working the same areas they didn’t have time to visit or enjoy each other’s presence. Even working together was rare with their close ranks and they often found themselves separated, heading up separate units. Demona certainly didn’t mind the work. She liked to be active and busy and protecting her clan was something she had always felt passionate about. Something she’d be willing to give everything for.
But keeping the castle safe was a full time job and sometimes she felt like she had already sacrificed everything. It made these rare unrestrained moments between herself and her beloved all the more precious. "A poet as always." She observed with an amused smile. She had never met another gargoyle with a gaze as intense as her mate’s and she found her herself caught helplessly in his eyes. She reveled in the way her breath caught at his beauty and the cluster of electric chills that raced down her back and arms that had nothing to do with the temperature.
The spell was broken as Goliath looked away and sighed and Demona blinked as reality came back into focus. Goliath was now looking down at the ground and she followed his gaze to where it rested on a small group of humans. A fire that was already burning inside Demona flared hotter with a different sort of heat than what she had felt moments ago and she felt her expression shift momentarily shift into one of disdain. She tilted her wings to slow her forward progression so abruptly that it snapped her whole body backward slightly. She quickly took a deep breath to calm herself. “Leave it, my love.” She cooed, trying to keep her voice even, “The others will deal with them.”

The large Gargoyle frowned at Demona's words, feeling that they really should go over to at least investigate the humans that he could see. After all, they were far enough away that he couldn't properly make out what was happening. And if he went off to find more about that patch of land, far away from Castle Wyvern, it would take him away from his love. Goliath needed to be here, in the sky, enjoying the time he was given to spend with his mate. They so rarely had any time to themselves that they couldn't afford to waste even a minute of it.
He still felt a sense of duty, but it could wait. There were only a few humans, as far as he could tell, and if they got any closer to the Castle, the old one would send some of his Rookery brothers and sisters to deal with any potential threat.
Goliath smiled, his talons still in his mate's grip. "You are right, of course, my love," his deep voice rumbled. "If they appear to be a threat when we return, we can deal with it then." He hoped the humans did not approach the castle; that would mean that the old one would have made an error in judgement, sending his two best warriors off into the night for time to themselves.
"I'm sure the others will handle them." Demona was pleased that Goliath had been amenable to her request. The earlier part of her evening that had been spent with the Archmage was plenty enough time spent with humans during this unscheduled suspension of her duties. Certainly the Old One would have accounted for both Goliath and her own absence from patrol that evening and made the appropriate substitutions. Those covering their watch would be able to handle a handful of bandits.
And yet even as they started to glide away from the patch of bright color in the dark canopy of the forest far below Demona could feel irritation leaking into her thoughts. Who were they and why were they anywhere near her castle home? How dare they decide to camp just where they were going to pass and catch his notice? Was he regretting that they had just left them there? Of course he was. Wasn't she thinking along a similar line?
She scowled and clenched her fists, more as a result of her thoughts than Goliath's words. She would never use the word 'threat' to describe humans. They were like bugs. Weak and vulnerable compared to the strength of a gargoyle. They swarmed and buzzed around where they weren't wanted or needed like bugs too.
"Humans are such a waste." Demona added after a few moments, muttering more to herself than her mate. She hadn't meant for the bitterness to leak into her voice but she didn't feel the need to apologize for it. She didn't like that the humans were living in the castle despite the supposed protection they offered her clan during the day. She lived for the day when they would leave and her kind could live in their own castle without feeling like the outsiders.

A frown formed on Goliath’s chiseled face at the bitter tone in his beloved's voice. He knew that she had been disillusioned with the humans for quite some time, but he was beginning to fear that he did not know how far the discontent went. Was this a passing phase or had it snaked down into her very core?
He certainly hoped that it was the former and not the latter; she was such a strong, fearless Gargoyle, and he would hate to see that potential turned to ill.
"Humans are a part of the natural order of things," Goliath rumbled, repeating what the Old One told younger Gargoyles when they showed an aversion to helping the humans. "And it is our place to protect them, just as they protect us during the day."
He was repeating the Old One's words, but he knew that they wouldn't have much of an influence on his angel; she was a strong-willed creature, and she would make up her own mind.
It was one of the things he so loved about her.
Gliding closer to her, he smoothed his frown into a smile, for her sake.
"Come, my love, let's not let them spoil our night. It is a beautiful night and we have been granted freedom to enjoy it."
He had a feeling that they would have precious little time together, in the days to come. They rarely had much time now, and if the Old One was weakening, the way that his beloved had suggested, at one point, well, they would have to be ready for anything.
Demona had every intention of telling Goliath exactly what she thought of the human's 'protection' of them. Frankly if the vermin hadn't invaded their castle in the first place, they wouldn't be at risk of invasion by various other human groups. Humans were always fighting with each other and trying to take things that didn't belong to them. If they hadn't come to Castle Wyvern at all, Demona had little doubt that she and the rest of her clan would be exponentially safer.
Goliath's love for the Old One blinded him to the true selfishness and destructive nature of the humans they so casually shared their home with. Though she too could respect the elder gargoyle, she would never completely trust the fool creatures that scorned and mistrusted her and her kind.
But when she looked over into Goliath's face, radiant with love and adoration, she could almost feel the anger begin to drain out of her. In this instance, he was right. She would not allow the humans to spoil her precious time left with Goliath.
There was little in this world that thrilled Demona as much as flying. She loved to fight but it was nothing compared to the exhilaration of soaring through the air. Except perhaps the magic she learned from the Archmage. But none of that mattered just then. All that mattered was the feeling of freedom that flying offered and knowing that her beloved mate glided beside her. Quirking a smile at her companion Demona tilted her wings allowing them to catch a sharp updraft, and let the wind carry her higher into the air.
