Jane Porter sat in her father's base camp, sketching the Princess of DunBroch from memory. It had been a little bit since she'd ended up on the Isle of the Beast, on the shores of DunBroch, but it had certainly been an interesting experience.
She was going to have to go exploring again; there were so many other places to see, with such a myriad of new species of plants and animals to sketch that she could hardly contain her excitement. Perhaps Tarzan would go with her this time, as well. Of course, she couldn't count on that; he wouldn't want to leave the family unprotected.
Which Jane understood, of course. Tarzan had told her of how he had killed Sabor, and Jane shuddered to think that there were other animals out there, intent upon ravaging her family.
She would probably have to go exploring herself, a fact which made her slightly sad. Oh, granted, it would be easier for her to simply plop herself down somewhere and make sketches, but she would have loved to have Tarzan along on her latest adventure. Jane would simply have to see if he wanted to go with her; there was so much to see, so much to do, and they would both be simply fascinated by the differences between their Isle of the Jungle and everywhere else in Rohandor.
Even as she was musing over how to convince Tarzan to go exploring with her, Jane noticed a disturbance in the trees, not too far from Daddy's camp.
Closing her sketchbook, she prepared to scream for Tarzan, should something be amiss.
Taking a deep breath, Jane called in the direction she'd noticed movement, "Is there something I can help you with?" she asked, wondering how a stranger could find the way to her Daddy's camp.

The main rule of nature anyone should know about travelling through a jungle is that it is pretty much impossible to travel unnoticed. Every step will at minimum disturb the local plant life which will rustle against the surrounding plants in a domino effect, broadcasting your presence to anyone listening. Add to that the birds, insects, reptiles and small animals that will rush away from your movements and pretty soon the whole jungle will know you're there.
This rule was currently affecting someone who, in both profession and species, would be the last person wandering around the jungle. Basil of Baker street, currently clad in a tan safari outfit with a pith helmet, was hacking his way through the jungle with a short machete. He'd come to this particular jungle as a follow up on the museum robbery incident he and Princess Ariel had thwarted a few days ago. After revisiting the curators office and going over the shipping manifests he had discovered that some unusual jewels were imported and delivered to the museum despite having no place in the new exhibit or indeed any current or upcoming exhibits. Dawson was currently holding down the fort at Baker Street, as both a doctor and military man he was certainly capable of handling all but the most vexing cases. A simple matter of stowing away on a cargo ship to get to the island and a few improvised methods of transportation had gotten the Detective this far.
A voice calling out caused Basil to pause mid swing. Female, well spoken, strong but slightly nervous and unmistakably British.
"Finally. Some civilisation." Stowing his knife back on his belt he rushed towards the sound of the voice, pushing the undergrowth aside. "Perhaps an embassy or a military outpost or.."
He paused as he came into a clearing. Someone had set up a small encampment in this area. Looking around Basil caught sight of several luxuries, a tea set, gramophone, books. A young lady holding a sketchpad sat looking in his diretion. The detective only had to give her a quick once over to determine her identity.
"Jane Porter I presume?"
ooc: sorry for determining her identity so quick. I'm hoping to set up one of those classic Sherlock moments where he tells someone how he worked out their identity. I'll edit if this isn't good for Jane

The young Englishwoman was quite prepared to either attempt to fight whatever it was coming through the bushes or to clamber up into one of the nearest trees, screaming for Tarzan as she fled. Her combat skills were minimal, at best, and usually consisted of the woman grabbing a fallen tree branch and brandishing it wildly at the foes she thought she stood some chance of ... well, scaring off, really. She hadn't been raised to do any fighting, after all; she'd been raised as a proper young Englishwoman should, with a bit more emphasis on learning, perhaps.
Hopefully, none of that would be necessary, but it was more likely for some jungle animal to wander into Daddy's camp than it would be for an adventurer to stumble across it.
And then, just as she was preparing to scream, the young woman heard a voice, speaking her name.
Jane looked around for the source of the voice, wondering how on earth someone could know who she was, all the way out here! Back in England, she and her daddy were recognized for their theories on gorillas, but in the jungle...there were so few people that it was ... almost alarming, really.
She couldn't locate the voice at eye-level, and so she looked down.
And saw a mouse, dressed in appropriate attire for the jungle, complete with pith helmet. Was ... the mouse where the voice had come from?
"Yes, I'm Jane Porter," she directed at the mouse, hoping that he was the creature who had spoken. If he wasn't, she was about to make a fool out of herself.
Kneeling down, she sat back on her heels, peering interestedly at the mouse. "But how on earth did you know that?" Jane inquired, quite curious as to how the mouse came to know her name. If they were from the same England, perhaps...but she thought she would have known if mice could dress and speak as smartly as this one; no, they had to be from different, parallel Englands. It was still nice to meet someone from home, though.
"Oh, goodness; I'm forgetting my manners!" the young woman exclaimed, glancing around for Daddy's tea set, "Would you care for a spot of tea, Sir?" she asked with a smile. She did not yet know the mouse's name, so 'sir' would have to do for the moment.

"It's all Elementary my dear Miss Porter." Basil replied to Janes confusion at how he knew her. "Before coming here I'd studied the area and read an article about an expedition to this jungle by Professor Archimedes Porter, his daughter and an individual named Clayton. The photograph they used was outdated but did show that he has a daughter named Jane. Given the time difference you'd be the most likely candidate. A later article suggested that the three of you were declared missing by the crew of the ship that brought you here. However given their logs listed a very short time period here which they listed as a search and rescue I'd hazard that staying here was your own choice?"
The detective was relieved that again he'd run into someone who was accepting of his species rather than treating him as vermin. Perhaps she'd met the Princess Ariel and heard about him? Apparently not given her apparent disbelief that he would answer her back. He gave her another once over trying to get any more information. It usually impressed the client or potential clients.
"Given your current barefooted state and the occasional reflexive gripping motion you do with your fingers and toes I'd also suggest that you've taken up climbing as a method of either getting around the local area or evading the more predatorial inhabitants of the jungle."
This ended the usual showing off. Jane seemed physically to be taking the concept of a talking mouse well, but it would remain to be seen how she would react verbally. The offer of tea was well received. Basil has spent the last few days with only his water flask to drink and he wouldn't pass on a more civilised drink. After a quick once over glance of the camp it seemed that Jane was the only current occupant. Hopefully nothing had happened to the rest of her group. If required the detective resolved that he would guide her back to civilisation and safety.
"Yes please, I would be most grateful for some tea." The detective bowed to introduce himself. "Basil of Baker Street, Detective and Agent of the Crown at your service. Forgive me for asking but....have you been in this jungle by yourself this whole time?"

Jane listened quite intently to the Mouse's explanation, finding it all quite logical. He was remembering things he'd already seen and using them to figure things out at present; it was quite clever, really.
Even as she was listening, Jane was preparing the tea things: she'd put the kettle over the fire that her daddy usually used for his experiments, and she was gathering up the tray with the sugar and scones on it (thank goodness for the trading post!) while the Mouse introduced himself.
Apparently, he was called Basil, of Baker Street, he said, and he was in the service of the Crown. Which crown, Jane had to wonder, though. If they were from parallel Englands, they might be from different time periods, she suspected. Although they probably weren't so far apart as all that, really, considering the Mouse's courtly manners and such.
She smiled at his last question and laughed, shaking her head. "Oh, goodness, no!" she told the Mouse, "My Daddy stayed behind with me, he's Professor Porter, you know," Jane added even though the Mouse had already mentioned her father's expedition, a hint of pride in her voice, "and of course, there's Tarzan and the rest of the family," Jane finished, smiling happily. "I do believe that Tarzan has taken Daddy on some sort of adventure, to hopefully discourage Daddy from the wearing of loincloths," the young Englishwoman said, a laugh escaping her again.
Her father really did try far too hard to be as much like Tarzan as he could, but when it came to clothing, everyone but the Professor agreed that he should stick to regular garments, not loincloths.
At that point, the kettle began to whistle, and Jane set the tea to brewing.
"I'm afraid we don't have any cups or saucers of your size," she began apologetically. "I'll have to get some as soon as I can; I'm sure Dumont can order something," Jane mused. "Oh, but would a thimble do or should I try to find something more suitable?" the young woman asked the Mouse, wanting ever so much to be considerate, but not quite having the appropriate crockery, at the moment.

"Umm, one second please." Basil started massaging his temples furiously while shutting his eyes and grinding his teeth. "Just trying to purge the thought of Professor Porter in a loincloth."
They say never meet your heroes, especially if their clothing choice would traumatise you. Basil was secretly grateful that the Professor wasn't around in such an attire. Such an image would be burned into Basils mind for life. He hummed a few bars of 'God Save the Queen' and did a few sums in his head before regaining composure. Afterwards he scurried up a table leg to meet Jane on more equal levels. Putting down his rucksack he began pacing around the tabletop he admired the chemistry set and books set up.
"Yes, please a thimble would do fine. Sorry I didn't prepare ahead. I wasn't quite expecting to meet anyone out in this jungle. Least of all with an appreciation for education like yourselves. Do you run some sort of school out here? I can understand the wildlife and nature material but the basic literacy and mathematics books seem out of place. Though come to think of it since I did find you here....."
He finished looking around and returned to his bag, retrieving a folded up photograph and spreading it out on the table while Jane was getting the tea. Learning from his experience with Ariel he'd packed both mouse and human sizes of photos (though Mrs Judson was out for his blood for filling the bath with the required amount of developing fluids). The image depicted a small amount of rubies, each carved into a cat eye shape, even with the thin iris in the middle. These were the jewels that had turned up unlisted at the museum.
"I don't suppose you've ever seen any stones like these? Apparently they came from this area."

"Be grateful that you've never observed him in such attire," Jane told Basil with a smile. "Or out of it!" she added, shaking her head. "I swear, every time Daddy tries to run around in a loincloth, something happens that it gets ripped, sometimes right from his body!" The young woman suppressed a shudder, bustling about the tea to keep the image of her father out of her mind; it had been bad enough at that point that she didn't need to keep reliving it.
Jane retrieved a thimble from her sewing things and quickly washed it in a cup of hot water she'd set aside, drying it with a scrap of clean fabric from the same basket. Setting out a cup and saucer for herself and thimble and a lid to one of her Daddy's quite small jars for Basil, Jane paid very close attention to the pouring of the tea; she tended to be quite clumsy when she was distracted.
Even as she was pouring the tea, Basil was asking her about the books that she and the Professor had in the camp.
"Oh, Daddy and I use those to teach Tarzan," she said brightly, setting the makeshift mouse cup and saucer down before Basil. "He could barely speak at all when we first arrived, but he's learned ever so much since then; he's really remarkably intelligent," she gushed, a tender smile slipping onto her face. "And he's ever so sweet when he doesn't know something, about asking. Of course, Daddy and I do our best to make sure he has all the knowledge that he should, being of the house of Greystoke, after all."
Jane was so busy chattering on about Tarzan that she didn't notice, for a moment, that Basil had unfolded a photograph and asked her a question.
She was about to start talking again when the photograph itself caught her eye. "Why do you have a photograph of the jewels of Opar?" she asked, slightly puzzled and more than a little bit cautious. Basil had seemed trustworthy enough, but if he was in the area to try to steal from the jungle, even from Opar, things wouldn't end well for him.

Basil accepted the tea while Jane explained her living situation. So Tarzan was related to Lord and Lady Greystoke? Where they around living in the camp too? Last the detective had heard of them they'd gone missing in this area. Although with the amount of tents around it'd be cramped living conditions for that many....oh. He took his helmet off to show due respect and lowered his head mournfully. Jane snapped him back to attention when she asked about the photograph. The Jewels of Opar she'd called them.
"You've seen them before? I had no idea what they were initially. I was following up on an attempted robbery at a museum back in London. Whilst I was going over the inventory I noticed that these particular jewels had been delivered with another unrelated exhibit. They were kept under lock and key while the staff tried to find out where they'd came from. The thieves, a pair of siamese cats, missed out on them but two days later someone else picked them up. The curator doesn't remember who though, or what they looked like. He insisted they had the proper paperwork but when he checked the files for a copy he just found some blank pages. I suspected some kind of diversionary trick, like a conman uses, keep talking so that the mark doesn't notice you doing anything until you've left. Anyway the original transport documents listed this isle as their origin, the problem is that they weren't too specific where exactly in this jungle they came from."
Basil took a quick sip after his ramble. Interesting flavour of tea. He'd have to ask about it later, maybe bring some home if he could. As he drank he did notice a suspicious glance from Jane, something about Opar didn't sit well with her perhaps.

Jane flashed a smile at Basil's show of respect for her deceased in-laws, but really, neither she nor Tarzan had ever known them. His parents were Kala and Kerchak, and Kerchak had been killed by Clayton, just as the gorilla had finally accepted Tarzan as his son.
The young woman would have loved to have gotten to know her husband's animal father better, just as she knew that Tarzan himself would have wanted to know Kerchak better. They didn't discuss it much, really, because of the heartache, but Jane could tell that there were times that Tarzan still missed Kerchak. Thank goodness they still had Kala.
She wished that the motherly gorilla were here now, to advise her what to tell this detective about the Jewels of Opar. Jane had only read stories in her daddy's books, but stories like that ... usually tended to be based on legends, legends that had their basis in truth.
Jane didn't think that he was here for sinister purposes; he was a detective, and he was trying to find the jewels, for the museum, like he'd said. But one could never be too careful, when it came to family. Still, she thought she could trust him.
"It is said that the Jewels of Opar belong to the Queen of the lost city," she told Basil, taking a sip of her own tea. "The woman who controls the jewels controls all the resources of Opar, that's what Daddy's books say," Jane recalled with a frown. "More than that, I'm not sure, but I can try to find the book I was reading...," she trailed off, standing up to make her way over to her father's haphazard library.
"Where was that book?" she muttered to herself, glancing through the titles. "None of the stories dealing with the jewels of Opar ended well; do be careful, Basil!"

Basil listened as Jane described what she remembered about the legend behind the jewels, though she did seem to be holding back. He thought things over as he finished off his tea.
"I've never given much thought to lost cities or the like. However the fact does remain that someone that could believe in such stories may have or at least tried to bring such jewels to London through the museum. Belief can be a powerful force. A few years back I had to foil a group that thought they could signal an entity who could help them reach a higher state of being by detonating explosives all over Tower Bridge. Fact or Fiction they could have killed a lot of people if they had succeded. I'll have to investigate the origin of the jewels further."
Scurrying down one table leg and climbing another the detective helped search through the books. Most were organised by subject then sub organised by title but the more used books seemed to have been put back hastily, skewing the whole layout. Basil paced back and forth reading the spines over.
" 'Mythology of the Dark Continent' perhaps? Or 'An Explorers Guide to the Lost Lands'? 'Planetary Guide 1854 edition' ?"
The mouse removed his hat to scratch his head as Jane warned him of the potential danger in searching out the Lost City of Opar or the apparently powerful Queen. He was not so easily deterred though.
"I'm worried of the consequences if I hold back on such a mystery Lady Porter. I wouldn't be as bold to put you in any danger though. Perhaps I'll just look up an approximate location for the city then trouble you no further."

Jane listened to the small detective's words even as she continued to look for the book that she'd been reading, the book that contained a rather large section on Opar and a sub-section on the Jewels of Opar.
"Please, do feel free to call me Jane," she said with a smile, picking up a rather hefty book that was a likely-looking candidate. "And you certainly won't be going alone, if we do find out where Opar is located. I, at least, will come with you, and I will talk to Tarzan, as well." They simply couldn't allow such an eminent detective to wander off into the jungle by himself, now, could they?
Turning the book over so she could see the title on the spine, she exclaimed excitedly, "Here it is!"
The book was old, though it had been meticulously kept in prime condition by Professor Porter. The title on the spine read The Dark Continent: Legends and Lore. It contained many different stories about Africa, some of which that were almost certainly based in truth, but it didn't quite dissect fact from fiction.
Jane took the book back to the table where they'd been having tea and checked the table of contents for the section that she wanted. Very carefully, the young woman flipped through the pages until she reached the section on Opar.
"Yes, this is it," she murmured. "There's an entire section on the Jewels of Opar, as well as on the lost city itself."
Hmm, if they were going to have frequent mouse-sized visitors, Jane was going to have to stock up on some smaller supplies, including books. She could help him turn pages, if he liked, but so far, Basil had proved to be an enormously capable mouse. Jane would help him when asked, but until then, she was going to operate under the assumption that he could handle himself.

While Jane was retrieving the appropriate book Basil was getting to work on finding the best plan for proceeding. Using the back of the photo of the jewels and a pencil from his supplies he started jotting down all the information he had so far. When the pages on Opar were laid down on the table Basil got to work sketching a rough map of the area that, in theory, the location of the lost city. The general area was mostly uncharted but the book contained references to a few expeditions by various groups and adventurers, all unsuccessful and some even not returning.
"Now this will be some help. We already know where the city isn't, so we can eliminate them and estimate where it is."
Occasionally he would scramble back and forth between the book and his notes, making sure he hadn't missed a step. Initially trying to turn the page himself with some difficulty and thanking Jane when she stepped in. Anything useful was added to the notes in case it did turn out useful, but most of the mythology was dismissed if there was no hint of proper evidence to back it up. Though the constant reference to jungle cats were interesting, a man ending up in an asylum when he came back babbling and carrying a carved statue of.....a panther? leopard or such? The detectives whiskers twitched in annoyance, it would have to be cats again.
Eventually the map was finished with arrows marking the expedition routes and shaded areas for the parts confirmed not to contain any lost city. Just one, admittedly large area, remained. Basil stood rubbing his chin in thought. Still, for what was mostly guess work he did feel proud of himself.
"Well that narrows things down. The only problem is covering such a distance. I'd best set out with all haste."
The detective turned back to Jane when she offered to join him in the search. Naturally he knew just how to reply.
"I'm afraid that's out of the question Miss Porter." He shook his head with his eyes closed as he faced her. "Such a task is far too dangerous for a lady such as yourself. I am grateful for all your help though, thank you very much."
He didn't say it with any cruelty or malice in his voice. Just stated it as fact. He was the detective and was prepared for danger and risking his life. On the other hand she was a civilian who, while a great help so far, had no place in dangerous field work. Of course she'd understand given her education.

Jane watched with fascination as the mouse detective went from book to makeshift drawing board and back, constructing a crude map from the information he had already had himself and the information in the book she'd provided.
She would have thought that he would have been inconvenienced by the fact that she didn't have anything his size, but it appeared as though he'd done this sort of thing before. Jane turned the pages when Basil indicated, glad to be of assistance in some way.
The young woman was looking forward to trekking out through the jungle, into the territory that she'd come to call home over the past few years. She could be a sort of guide, for the detective, and she could help if there were larger-than-mouse sized problems.
He must run into those a lot, now that she thought of it, but he seemed, so far, anyway, to be able to handle just about anything.
One couldn't be too careful in a place like the jungle, however; there were predators here that would eat a mouse, dressed though he was, and ask questions later, if they cared to find out anything at all, which was unlikely.
Apparently, the mouse detective had other plans.
Jane narrowed her eyes at his words, putting her hands on her hips with a frown.
"Now you look here, Mister Basil of Baker Street," she started, leaning down so that she was at eye-level, "I happen to know this jungle a lot better than you do; I've been living here for several years, and I am quite capable of taking care of myself." Yes, there were times she needed Tarzan's assistance, but she could generally manage herself.
"If you think I am going to let a mouse, no matter what his profession wander into the jungle alone, I can assure you that you are profoundly incorrect."

After making his point quite clear Basil turned away to gather his belongings and map, only to freeze as he turned back to face a quite put off looking Jane. She made her rebuttal quite clear on the subject of who was going and who was staying put. By the end of it Basil was left with his tail standing on end and a stammer coming from his throat, taking a few seconds to come up with a response.
"F-Fine. But-but just so you know I do not intend to backtrack on this search. and if anything dangerous presents itself I expect you to act with some common sense."
It was half anger and half intimidation in his voice as he tried to stare down Jane, a comical sight considering he had to look upwards to do so. Almost any case the detective went on he'd attract someone looking to tag along, probably putting things out of place or getting into trouble. The absolute worst were the ones who tried to apprehend criminals themselves and needed rescuing. Still, Miss Porter was better taught than the others and for some reason she seemed concerned about HIS safety. In this instance it would be a waste of time convincing her to stay.
"Just don't take too long gathering anything you need." Basil instructed as he climbed back down the table. "It will be quite a walk but hopefully we can reach the city before nightfall."
With that the mouse began a sharp march west. Assuming Jane would be able to catch up with him easily enough. Humans did take bigger strides after all, hopefully she wouldn't mind following him since he did have the map tucked into his backpack. Just an attempt to act like he had control of the situation.

Jane raised an eyebrow at Basil's words. He expected her to react with common sense in regards to danger? She'd been living in the jungle, for goodness' sake! There were dangers to be dealt with every day! And, she wasn't a mouse, venturing into unknown territory.
On the other hand, it was quite admirable that he didn't let his size hinder his investigations, but he really needed to be a bit less reckless; one of these days, it was going to get him into quite a bit of trouble.
For a trek into the jungle, at least, one of this nature, Jane didn't need to take anything with her.
Scrawling a quick note to Daddy and Tarzan, Jane set off after the mouse detective, overtaking him easily.
And then, she had an idea.
Jane bent down and scooped up the detective, making sure to be quite careful with how she handled him.
Putting him on her shoulder, she said, "It might be quite a long walk, but this way will be much quicker."
With a bit of a mischievous grin, she added, "Hold on tight," before taking to the vines that were Tarzan's favorite method of transportation.

Professor Ratigan: 'Twas a good trip! I'm sad it's over, but at the same time I'm glad to be back home so I can finish up my cosplays for a con next month and hang out with my cats
Jul 26, 2018 12:34:56 GMT -5
Basil of Baker Street: Hope the cosplay goes well. I'm putting away a little extra for a con in a few weeks. and yay cats, they're always good company. Except for that one who slaps me unprovoked XD. So what cosplays do you have in mind unless they're secret?
Jul 26, 2018 17:07:41 GMT -5
Professor Ratigan: I'm cosplaying Pearl from Steven Universe and Joseph Joestar from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure!
Jul 26, 2018 23:16:41 GMT -5
Professor Ratigan: I'm almost done both of them, I just have to finish styling Pearl's wig and fix up Joseph's gloves and wristbands
Jul 26, 2018 23:17:31 GMT -5
Basil of Baker Street: Awesome. Had to look up Jojo because I'm not hip with the modern pop culture but I hope they turn out well.
Jul 30, 2018 15:33:15 GMT -5
Professor Ratigan: I only just started watching the anime last year and I haven't even touched the manga, so I'm barely hip with it lol. fortunately I have my cosplay buddy guiding me through the whole experience
Jul 30, 2018 22:29:38 GMT -5
Professor Ratigan: also I finally finished the gloves! They were more of a pain to work with than I expected, but they'll hold together... I hope...
Jul 30, 2018 22:30:13 GMT -5
Basil of Baker Street: Niceness. Hoping they hold also. Got the Dublin comic con next Saturday here. Hoping to meet Karl Urban.

Professor Ratigan: Cool! I think he's coming to my city in the fall, if I remember correctly. Hope you enjoy the con, Daryl!
Aug 2, 2018 19:10:23 GMT -5
Basil of Baker Street: I spoke too soon. Karl Urban had to cancel for schedule conflicts. They got Nick Frost though, I'm gonna ask him if he'll sign my Hot Fuzz.
Aug 3, 2018 18:08:47 GMT -5
Professor Ratigan: Dang! Nick Frost is great though, I love his character in Into the Badlands
