If anything could be said about Castle Wyvern, aside from its rather bizarre addition to New York's skyline, was that it was beautiful. Elisa had thought so the first time she laid eyes on it as well. Of course that view had been somewhat obscured by cloud cover not to mention the debris that had fallen from it and nearly crushed any number of civilians down on the streets far below.
The claw mark etched into the stone had been Elisa's first glimpse of the gargoyles though she couldn't have known it at the time. Nor could she have known how her life would have been changed by their introduction to it. She'd rode the elevator up to the top of the building then just as she did now although this time she didn't have to be sneaky in order to get out to the castle courtyard.
Everything was so different now and it was almost hard to believe how 'full circle' everything had come. Despite the fact that if it wasn't for Xanatos the gargoyles might have been captured and carted off to who knew where, Elisa didn't trust him as far as she could throw him, which considering her prime physical condition would probably be pretty far and she had no problem testing out her theory sometime should he ever decide to betray them as she most certainly expected him to.
Even though they'd been here for quite some time now, Elisa didn't think she would ever get used to the gargoyles living back in the castle they had been forced out of soon after their awakening for their own safety. But they were happy to be home and she couldn't bring herself to taint that happiness after everything with her doubts and concerns. At least not while Xanatos seemed on his best behavior.
Stepping into the cool night air Elisa moved into the courtyard of the castle. She was feeling nostalgic for some reason and found herself retracing the steps she had taken that first night she had forced her way into the castle. Upon reaching a stone wall she felt a whisper of a smile on her lips as she ran her hand over the cold damp stone. She'd fallen over the wall in this very spot. Terrified of the monsters she had discovered. It was not funny at the time by any means but knowing what she knew now, it was more than a little amusing to her.
Goliath had saved her then. She would have died, but he had saved her. The idea of being caught up in his strong arms made her feel warm all over and the smile that had been threatening her lips instantly faded away. She stared at her hand, still on the cold stone of the wall and tried not to frown. Oh Goliath. Even as her doubts and fears started to tug at her soul her heart seemed to beat a little faster at the thought of him.
Everything had gotten so confusing lately especially when Jason came into the picture. Now he was out of it, romantically anyway, but it seemed to have been a catalyst, pushing things ahead when they might have otherwise remained unchanged. She knew how she felt about Goliath. How she had felt about him for a long time. But how was she ever supposed to be with him? It wasn't that she cared about what other people thought exactly... but she did to a point. It wasn't as though they could get married and even if they somehow worked past that obstacle she wanted kids someday. Kids he couldn't give her. Kids she couldn't give him.
Elisa let out a sigh and tried to push all those thoughts from her head. How did she even start worrying about that again all of a sudden? She supposed it wasn't all that sudden. It was always there in the back of her mind since she had kissed him that day. As much as she cared about him. Loved him. She knew they could never really and truly be together. She glanced out at the skyline and let out another sigh. Why did everything always have to be so complicated?

"A Gargoyle doesn't whine; he ROARS!"
Post by Goliath on Jun 6, 2012 1:30:52 GMT -5
As the sun sank beneath the clouds, a strange thing was happening on top of the Eyrie building: the Gargoyles were awakening. For someone who did not know what was going on, the sight would be awe-inspiring, frightening to some. But for those who knew what was happening, it was a sight to behold, one that some people looked forward to.
Goliath stretched his arms, wings stretching with them. Another uneventful day had passed, passed into the night. Into the time of the Gargoyles.
It was now their time, their time to awaken, to protect, to explore.
To love.
But Goliath couldn't think about Elisa right now; he had to organize the night's patrols.
As was now their custom, the clan gathered in the courtyard of Castle Wyvern, ready for their leader's instructions.
"Broadway, Lexington, the two of you will cover downtown. Be on your guard; everything has changed since our revelation to the humans. Do not take needless chances," he told two of the Trio, watching them as they leapt off the edge of the castle.
And now, it was time to talk to his daughter and Brooklyn.
"The two of you will go up town. As I told the others, be on your guard."
Angela ran to the edge of the roof and took to the sky even as Goliath stopped Brooklyn for a moment longer.
"Angela is not used to the hostility of humans. Protect her from her innocence," he instructed. It was deviating from the Gargoyle Way, true enough, but Goliath now understood why humans treated their offspring the way that they did. Angela meant the world to him; the time that the Hunters had almost killed her....he had been distraught. Goliath didn't know what he would have done if he had lost Angela.
The large Gargoyle shook his head, clearing it of such morbid "what-ifs."
"Hudson, you and Bronx will watch over the castle."
He would usually take to the skies himself, at that point, but he wanted to look down upon the city, to observe his protectorate.
Goliath made his way up the stairs, wings caped around him. The fact that he was headed towards the spot where he and Elisa had first met brought a smile to his chiseled features.
As any thought of her usually did.
The sight that met his eyes as he reached the top of the stairs was a very welcome one: Elisa was waiting for him.
"Elisa," he greeted the woman he loved, deep voice a tender rumble. "It is good to see you," he added, enfolding her into his arms and wings. Though it had been only a day since he had last seen her, it always seemed like an eternity.

Elisa had been so lost in her own musings that the sound of Goliath’s voice startled her. Looking up she realized that the sun had in fact gone down while she had been pondering and she’d missed the ‘show.’ She turned towards him and felt her heart begin to flutter as she allowed herself to be wrapped up in him completely resting her hands and cheek on his chest.
When she was here, when she was with him, it was easy to ignore all the doubts and fears she had about a relationship with him. A warm and safe feeling washed over her. There was no question of her strength and independence but sometimes it was nice to know that there would be someone there to catch her if she fell- Both literally and figuratively. And she knew that Goliath would always be there for her.
She smiled warmly up at him when they released from the embrace, pushing her hair over her shoulder with one had before stuffing both of them into the pockets of her jacket. “Hey big guy,” She said playfully. She glanced around feeling a little puzzled at the lack of activity about the castle. “Where is everybody?”

"A Gargoyle doesn't whine; he ROARS!"

Every moment he spent with Elisa, Goliath felt that the world was perfect. In reality, he knew that things were far from ideal, but Elisa just made everything better.
He smiled as she ran her hand through her hair, unable to keep his own from following suit. Her hair was one of the first things that had drawn him to her, and he'd always found it beautiful. Goliath found everything about Elisa to be beautiful; she was one of the most stunning creatures he'd ever met, human or Gargoyle.
So lost in his thoughts was he that he didn't realize, at first, that Elisa had asked him a question.
"They are patrolling the city," he told her, taking a moment to gaze over the ramparts, to witness his protectorate. "Though Demona's evil plan has been stopped, Manhattan is far from safe." Elisa knew that, of course; she was part of the clan, and it was literally her job to protect this city.
But there was more on Elisa's mind than that. She hadn't said anything, but Goliath could tell.
"Elisa?" he ventured, turning to face her again. "Is there something on your mind?" He wasn't usually so blunt, but, well, it was obvious that she had been lost in thought when he'd first appeared on the ramparts.

Elisa nodded as Goliath answered her question and followed his gaze back out to the city. It made sense for him to have already sent the others out on patrol under the current 'state of emergency' state they found themselves in. With the Forever Stone breached who knew what kind of dangers were going to be out there. She should probably be out there too and wondered why Goliath hadn't gone with them maybe for the same selfish reasons she'd stopped by the castle.
She frowned at the mention of Goliath's ex. Less so because she was his ex and more so because she had a relentless habit of trying to kill her. The other gargoyle had been lying low for a long time and whether it was because she had been trying to avoid imprisonment in the Forever Stone or simply didn't have a plan of any kind Elisa really couldn't be sure.
Goliath's next words startled Elisa out of her musings and she turned to look up at him, her briefly astonished expression quickly replaced with a wry look, "What? I can't just come by for the view?" She prodded playfully, turning to humor to try and keep the situation from taking a serious and potentially dangerous turn.
Elisa hadn't thought she was showing any signs of her earlier apprehension but then maybe he had noticed when he first approached. Or maybe it was simply that Goliath was always so good at reading her. It was almost unnerving when he would look at her in those moments, as though he could see right into her soul. "It's nothing," She said, trying to sound casual and simply brush off his words. Elisa looked back out over the city attempting to appear as though she just wanted to scan the skyline again and wasn't trying to avoid looking Goliath in the eyes. "Just worried about everything."
Goliath generally didn't out right ask her about things, usually careful not to intrude on her privacy. But then their relationship was changing as much as she was trying to ignore it. The kiss they had shared had opened a door that could never be closed again. She didn't regret it but part of her simply didn't want to deal with what was on the other side.

"You know that you are always welcome, for any reason," he responded. He knew she was trying to make a joke, but, well, Goliath wasn't exactly the joking kind. It was his way to respond to such a joke with reassurances, which he had done.
There was definitely more to it than Elisa was letting on; it had to be something serious if she had reacted that way to Goliath's fairly simple, straight-forward question.
It was true that he didn't usually come right out with asking direct questions, but things had changed recently. He wasn't sure whether or not Elisa considered that change to be for the better or if it had made things worse. Which was why he knew that she wasn't simply "worried about everything."
"I think there is more to it than that," he murmured, sitting on the ramparts of the castle. This could turn out to be a long discussion, but it clearly needed to happen.

There was a petulance that welled up in her then. That stubborn part of herself that caused her to argue with Captain Chavez and her partner Matt over anything and everything to do with a case she was on when she decided she was right or that they needed to take a certain action. She wanted to tell Goliath to just back off and let it go. That it really was nothing important and he was being pushy and unreasonable even though she knew he wasn't being that way at all.
Instead Elisa heard herself blurting out, "I was thinking about us, okay?" She took a deep breath and let it out sharply. She relaxed the tense fists she hadn't even realized her hands had balled into and wrapped her arms defensively around herself in response to her outburst. She looked away towards the city, unable to meet his eyes, repeating in a quiet more subdued tone, "I was thinking about us."
Elisa closed her eyes for a moment and let the words hang in the air. It wasn't Goliath's fault she was so confused about everything. All he'd ever done was be himself. A calm in the storm that was her world. A rock that she could cling to when the sea of her life threatened to drag her down under. No, he didn't deserve her frustration with herself.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to snap like that." She murmured. Elisa unwrapped her arms from around her body and stuffed them back into her jacket pockets. "It's just... things are different...now. I can't stop thinking about- Oh, I don't know, everything." She threw her frustrated hands in the air for a moment before linking her fingers behind her neck. It was only then that she dared look up at him. Almost afraid of that hurt expression that was bound to be there.

Goliath could practically feel the change in Elisa's mood; before she'd been thoughtful, and now, she was starting to bristle. The fact that he had pressed her had hit a nerve. Clearly, what she'd been thinking about had been ... upsetting to her, if she was reacting this way to his attempt to try to figure out how best to provide her with the support she might need.
To say that he wasn't surprised and hurt when she snapped at him would be a lie. He knew that she had a temper, but it was so rarely directed at him that he sometimes forgot what it was like to be on the receiving end of her barbs.
"Elisa, I ....," he started, then stopped, not sure what to say. "If you want me to forget what happened," he rumbled, caping his wings around himself, much the way she'd hugged her arms to her chest, "it is impossible. But," he added, slowly, the words like a knife in his heart, "I can continue to be your ... friend, and nothing more."
Even as he was speaking, he wanted to rage, to ask her how she could expect him to remain simply her friend when they were both feeling so much more. How could she expect him to watch her as she went about her own life, especially if she wanted to include a family in that life, a family that wasn't with him. She was part of the clan, but he would never be able to accept anyone with whom she chose to have a romantic relationship into the clan; he simply wouldn't be able to.
"I want only your happiness, Elisa," he told her, his quiet voice like a rumble of close thunder, even as he ran a clawed hand gently through her hair. It would mean heart-wrenching pain for him, should she decide she was capable of moving on, but as long as she would be happy, he would willingly walk through the gates of hell.

Goliath's talons in her hair sent a shiver through her and she fought the urge to reach up and put her hand over his. Instead Elisa shoved her hands back into her pockets. Part of her wanted to yell. To scream. To vent her frustrations. To reach out and shake Goliath or otherwise try to provoke him into an argument. Everything was so confusing and she was so distressed all of a sudden with no release in sight. Why did he always have to be so calm and infuriatingly understanding?
Because that's who he was. And it was one of the many reasons that Elisa had come to care for him. His ability to always keep a cool head under any conditions- even an emotionally charged situation like this one.
The pain in his eyes stung her more than she expected and a wave of guilt washed over her. She wanted to reach out to him but given the circumstances didn't feel as though she had the right. Elisa had no words for a long time and looked everywhere but into his eyes. She turned away and walked towards the crumbling castle wall and placed her hands on the cool surface of the stone to brace herself as she leaned on it in her frustration.
Sighing she finally spoke again, "I didn't mean that I don't want..." Didn't want what? Him? A relationship?
A memory was suddenly prevalent in her mind. A memory that she visited more often than she was willing to admit. The evening when Demona had temporarily turned all the humans in New York into Gargoyles, including herself. Gliding with Goliath that night had been... euphoric. She'd been able to look at him through the eyes of a being that was just the same as he. Then he had been turned into a human and for a brief moment after her own humanity had been restored, she and Goliath had simply been a boy and a girl that cared very deeply about one another. The attraction she had felt then was unlike anything she had ever experienced. And just like that the magic was reversed and everything had returned to the way it was.
Except the pull towards Goliath had remained unchanged. She was reminded of a book called The Last Unicorn. The unicorn of the story was turned into a human and even after she was changed back retained feelings of regret and love that no other of her kind would ever know. Elisa felt like that now. Like something inside of her had been irrevocably altered. That she would never really fit in among ordinary humans again.
She knew Goliath had felt the connection that day too. He'd tried to talk to her about it but she'd silenced him. That's the way it has to be. They couldn't be together no matter how they felt. They were too different.
She'd tried to start a relationship with Jason but deep down she knew that she loved Goliath and couldn't bring herself to let it go any further than a guilt-ridden kiss. So why couldn't she just be happy? Enjoy what she and Goliath had now? Why couldn't her mind stop pointing out all of the things they might miss out on if they stayed together? All the things they couldn't have? The reasons they shouldn't be together.
She straightened and moved to position herself in front of Goliath once again. Forcing herself to look up into his eyes Elisa felt a warmth flow through her that she only ever felt in the presence of Goliath. "You know how I feel about you, right? How much I care?" She reached out a hand toward his face to let her fingers touch the strong smooth angles of his cheek. "I don't regret what happened." She attempted to assure him, "I just can't help thinking about... the future." The words sounded cliché even as she spoke them. What was this some late night sitcom? "How this is going to work."

She tried to reassure him, but he knew that she was thinking about how different they were, and how things had changed the day she had kissed him. And things had changed; no one could deny that. Even the other members of the clan sensed it. Or at least his daughter did. Angela had been watching the two of them, trying to get the rest of the clan to leave the two of them alone together as often as she thought they wouldn't notice.
But Goliath had noticed his daughter's behavior. He had noticed because it concerned Elisa. And he did his best to always observe the comings and goings around the woman he loved, though he had not yet told her that.
Elisa cared for him, that much was certain. If she did not, things would not now be so complicated and painful, for both of them. The hardest part about this situation was that both of them cared. But what could be done? Elisa was right to think about the future; she was a beautiful young woman who was in the prime of her life. It was normal for her to want to be able to marry, to raise a family, things that she wouldn't be able to do if she chose to have a relationship with him.
It pained him to think of these things, but it would be selfish of him not to consider them.
If only he was a human or if she a Gargoyle; things would be much simpler. But after Puck's spell had been reversed, all hope of that had faded away.
"You are right to think of the future," he rumbled, though he didn't want to be saying these words. It was hard for him, what he was going to do, but he wanted Elisa to be happy, to have the life that she'd always dreamed of.
"I care about you too much to see you unhappy, Elisa," Goliath told her, gazing seriously into her eyes. "I cannot in good conscience say that things will work, that we will figure it out. Our kinds are too different," the Gargoyle said softly, finally looking away from Elisa, out toward the city. His city. Their city.
"I couldn't bear to lose you," he whispered, and he was the one looking everywhere but at the woman he loved. "But you should do what will give you the most happiness," Goliath repeated, clutching at the stone of the ramparts so hard that little chips of stone flaked to the floor. This was by far the hardest decision he'd ever had to make, the hardest words to ever pass his lips. He wanted to weep, but he stood strong, talons gripping the stone in front of him, eyes turned towards the city.

Goliath actually seemed to pull away from her touch and the idea that walls might be going up between them was agony. They had always been able to be there for each other and be honest with one another and now everything was just that much more complicated. Her stomach twisted and her eyes burned as though she might cry. This was the hardest conversation she’d ever had to have in her life and it wasn’t getting any easier. Why did he have to be so wonderful? So good and kind and understanding? It made everything so much harder. She wanted to wrap her arms around him and reassure him. Tell him that she cared about him and despite their differences they would make it work. But she couldn’t do that. If that were the case they wouldn’t be having this conversation at all.
Her family had been so incredibly accepting of Goliath and the others. She almost felt like her mother knew there was something between them but hadn’t said anything about it. Would her mother be as accepting of the creatures, these gargoyles, if she knew how much Elisa cared about them? About Goliath in particular? Despite all the obstacles they could be facing and all the reasons why they should not take this situation any further, the look on Goliath’s face made her want to toss away all of it and do whatever it took to make sure she never had to see that look of veiled pain in his eyes ever again.
“You’ll never lose me.” Even as she said the words she realized how ridiculous it sounded. Yes she might be a member of the clan but how could she expect him to sit by and watch as she saw other people? She had a taste of what it might be like when she had almost become involved with Jason Canmore, someone she still had strong feelings for, and it hadn’t been a pleasant experience for any of the trio. Of course, it didn’t help that Jason was hunting down Goliath’s kind and that things between herself and Goliath had been uncertain at best. If she did choose start seeing other people- …seeing people, they would both go into it knowing and understanding the situation.
“No matter what happens…” she had started to say ‘between us’ and opted not to add that part in, “You can always come to me with anything. I… I don’t know what is going to happen with…” She steeled herself, “Between us but I can’t imagine the rest of my life without you in it somehow. You’ve changed my life in so many ways, ways even I probably don’t know about. Opened my eyes to new experiences and possibilities. I wouldn’t be who I am today if it wasn’t for you.” She paused and looked up at him, feeling her eyes starting to burn again, “And I am happy. So happy sometimes I don’t think it’s right.” Elisa was having a hard time trying to find her words. She wasn’t one to pour out her heart to anyone but if it was going to be someone, it would be Goliath. “It’s when I start thinking about what’s to come that it all gets…” Confused? Frustrating? Foggy? Muddled? “Complicated.” She wished that she could just be happy in the moment and enjoy what they had without worrying but… she just wasn’t built that way.

"A Gargoyle doesn't whine; he ROARS!"
Post by Goliath on Oct 7, 2013 13:37:25 GMT -5
"You cannot promise that," Goliath murmured, his rumble of a voice barely above a whisper. Even he could not promise that. He would do absolutely everything in his power to protect her, but when Angela had been injured, it had been his own desire for revenge that had almost cost Elisa her life.
He shook his head, gripping the ramparts just a little bit tighter, little chips of stone falling to the floor under his talons. This situation ... was an impossible one. Perhaps they should have allowed her to remain an amnesiac, when they had landed on Easter Island...., then they wouldn't be having this conversation.
But Goliath knew that that wouldn't have helped. He never would have been able to do that to Elisa; he would have fought tooth and nail, just as he had, for her memories, for her, even if she had ended up hating him.
The large Gargoyle heaved a sigh as he turned back to Elisa, forcing himself to meet her gaze, despite the pain that he was sure was reflected in his own.
"Then perhaps we should not think," he suggested. "Perhaps we should leave things where they are." And where was that, really? More than friends, less than lovers? To be forever in love with someone it was impossible to truly "have and hold," as the humans would say? And yet...even that would be better than being forced to watch Elisa try to move on, to watch her try to be with someone else.

Something tightened in Elisa’s chest at his words. Leave things where they are. What did that even mean? She couldn’t help her thoughts returning once again to where they were. How were they supposed to stay friends if the two of them started to see other people? Goliath had already demonstrated that he was going to have a hard time with it. Granted it might have been made worse by the fact that Jason had been trying to kill the clan but neither of them knew that when Elisa had started to get closer to him.
Elisa herself had had something of a difficult time with it as well. The idea of having a normal relationship with someone was so completely appealing to her she had let things go further with Jason than she might otherwise have. When she was with him everything felt a little bit more real and the gargoyles and their fantastical existence and problems could almost be written off as some sort of dream that she had woken up from.
But she had know that was not the case the moment Jason had kissed her. The feeling of guilt and betrayal that had welled up inside her had been painful to say the least. And the further guilt of how much she enjoyed being with Jason and how much she wished Goliath could be human with her. That the two of them could just be together without all these supernatural problems.
Elisa held his gaze, “I can promise that and I just did.” Elisa insisted. “It doesn’t matter where life takes us from here. I will always be here for you. And the others.” As the words left her lips an image popped into her head of herself sitting on the couch alone with her children and Goliath showing up needing her help. And another immediately after that someone breaking into her house to kidnap herself or one of her children in an attempt to get at the gargoyles. He might be right. But right now she didn’t want him to be right and let her words stand.
She paused as she took in a breath and let it out before settling on what she wanted to say next, “What do you want?” It was a short question. It should be a simple question. But it was a question that she herself had only part of the answer. “What do you want to do?”

Goliath smiled at Elisa's words, a small, sad smile. As much as they might want to remain in each other's lives, neither of them could see the future. If Elisa moved on without him, and had a family of her own, one that didn't include him, he didn't know how long he would be able to keep his word to remain in her life, if it meant seeing her with someone else, with someone who could give her the things he desperately wanted to give her, but never could.
It would be too painful for the both of them. And he would never speak of it to her, if that happened. If Elisa was happy.....that was all that mattered.
He would continue doing his duty to protect the island of Manhattan, his new protectorate, and he would say nothing of his pain.
Goliath had lived with pain before, he could do it again.
The question she posed to him was short, and it should have been simple. He should be able to answer right now, with no qualms about what he wanted versus what was for the best.
But the truth was that he didn't entirely know what he wanted. He loved Elisa, and wanted to be with her, but if that was going to serve to make things uncomfortable for her, or serve to make her unhappy in the long run, then he didn't want that, no matter how much his heart might yearn for her.
He had spoken truthfully when he'd told Elisa that he cared for her too much to see her unhappy, even if that meant his own happiness. If Elisa was discontented with what they had, then they needed to fix it so that she was content and happy.
Goliath considered his words carefully. What could he tell her? She wanted to know what he desired, but how could he answer if he didn't completely know, himself?
"Perhaps I should ask Puck for the same ... gift he gave to Demona," he mused out loud, part of him completely serious. The other part...well, he wasn't quite sure what the other part of him was feeling.

Elisa's gazed traced the lines of Goliath's face as she waited for his answer. She hadn't really been prepared to talk about any of this tonight and she could feel the gravity that the conversation held pressing on her chest. This had been something in the back of Elisa's mind for quite some time now and there didn't seem to be any easy fix the two of them could come up with in the immediate future.
Elisa felt her eyes widen when Goliath did speak again and she shook her head, "Goliath. No. No, That- That wouldn't solve anything." Wouldn't it though? Her thoughts betrayed her as the image of Goliath turned human flashed before her eyes. Things would be so much easier for them if he were human or if she were a gargoyle. But Elisa knew that was not a sacrifice she was willing to make. She wouldn't give up her life as a human for Goliath as much as she cared for him and she couldn't ask him to do that for her. After all, didn't loving someone mean loving them just as they were?
"Demona is... different. She's immortal or whatever. She can't die or be hurt so she doesn't need the stone sleep like you and the others do. What would happen if you were deprived of it?" And Elisa would be sleeping during the majority of his human hours. And what about Angela? What would she think? And wouldn't it make him more vulnerable? ...would the two of them be able to have children? Elisa shoved the traitorous thoughts from her mind. It didn't matter. None of it mattered. It was out of the question.
Plus, as much as Elisa knew that there was nothing left between Goliath and Demona, she couldn't help but feel like Goliath having the same deal as Demona would somehow... bond them. Even more so than Angela. Elisa had nothing but love for the dark-haired girl gargoyle but sometimes she wondered how Goliath would handle it if Demona gave up her hateful crusade to come back to the clan and be with her daughter.
"Besides," Elisa said trying to lighten the weight that hung around them, "Puck couldn't do anything like that. Oberon put a leash on his abilities, remember? He can only use them to help Alex learn about his own powers. It's not likely he would be able to do anything like that again." At least in their lifetimes.
Not to mention magic always came with a price. There would be some sort of compensation demanded for a favor like that... And that was something Elisa would never wish Goliath need pay.
(OOC: I feel like this is kind of awful. I'm sorry.)
